Welp, I took a gamble and it didn’t pay off.

Late last Friday, I got an Ebay offer on a cute 1 ct Pear Cut. I saw that the stone has surface graining, but as GIA graded it as a VS1, I thought it was worth a look…

I just got the stone today and…it’s milky. I know that the stone is a bit spready, but it reads like a Fancy White in real life. Has anyone else seen a VS1 stone like this one?

That's a crazy effect! Especially in a VS1

Thank you! I searched up Surface Graining on PS before accepting the offer. It seemed like there wasn’t any issue in VS2 clarity and above stones. Oh well-live and learn-the stone is going back tomorrow!

Could the “fair” polish grade have something to do with it?

Yes have ran into this before and its absolutely nuts that it got a vs1 clarity grade.
That comment means run.
They are saying we can not see into it so we are just grading what we can see.

Hahahaha that's so insane

Feeling my confidence in GIA wavering. That is so freakin' obvious.
The webinar with the Ada diamond couple went into this in some detail. None of their bad examples were this bad,

That's too bad. Pears are hard to find.
I have to say, I don't really understand the comment on the GIA.
I can see into it fine, and it's hazy!

Yikes! One more thing to look out for. Seem like it really shouldn't be a VS1 clarity if you cant see through the surface graining.

Hi @Karl_K I was hoping that you would respond!

I knew looking at the cert that surface graining was an issue, but I thought wouldn't been that big of an issue with a VS1 . Now I know better!

Wonder about the comment about grading ‘insofar as surface conditions permit’? What would have been blocking part of the stone? They don’t grade set - peculiar! So sorry it didn’t work out for you.

I know-I found that wording to be strange too! The stone was graded loose.

I wasn't sure. Seems like it's just due to the Surface Graining.

Why are they unable to "see into it"? Bizarre...
If that's the case, how can they give it as VS1 clarity?

:lol-2: Glad to know that I am setting the low bar!

Haha I keep coming back to this crazy stone. If it had strong fluor I would want to buy it from you haha. Such an oddity!
Whats funny is one of the oddest diamonds I have seen was a fancy white with major yellow florescence.
It went from a milky white to pee yellow depending on lighting.
I had forgotten all about it until you mentioned this.

GIA should be criminally liable for costs and damages!
I have seen worse VS2's.
The stone is probably loupe clean.
GIA have an obligation to add a transparency grade - especially now that so many grown diamonds have transparency issues!

Ha, I was also looking at it and thinking it would be a cool "menagerie" stone.

Amen.
At this point it would contribute to consumer protection!
