Children are dying after swallowing those tiny lithium batteries that are showing up in more and more ordinary gadgets and toys.

It's not that the kids choke on them.
The batteries cause electrical currents which leads a build up of sodium hydroxide which burns through the esophagus and blood vessels causing uncontrollable internal bleeding. :knockout:

Weird!
Who would have guessed?

They have a big campaign in our media about them and have had for the past few years. So many things toy lights, handheld games all sorts of things we don't think of have them in it. A small child picked up one off the floor of a shopping centre not far from where I lived swallowed it and died so it's something everyone should be aware of.

Oh boy, let's stick to Melissa and Doug toys!

The first step is to make sure the batteries are out of reach of children. I usually do this anyway because I am aware that it is possible to get a current discharge when the two ends complete a circuit (put into the mouth or with the tongue).
