PS Appraisers

Hello All,

Would you trust any appraiser that''s listed on PS? Would most appraisers be willing to accept shipment of a diamond from a local retailer if I''m just going to pick the diamond up without an appraisal?

I would use an appraiser listed on PS as one of the candidates to do an appraisal for me subject to my own research on ones I did not know well. As to the second question you would have to check with the appraiser you had in mind.

What it takes to be listed as a PS appraiser is to present yourself as an appraiser who doesn’t buy or sell as a function of the appraisal practice, meet a minimum standard of gemological training, fill out the form and pass a credibility check from the admins. This is certainly a good place to start but I would not call it an especially thorough test. Read their web page, check their credentials, talk to them on the phone or by email, Google their name and ask questions about them here on the forum to hear from prior clients.

Some appraisers are prepared to received shipments and others aren’t. Ask ‘em. Similarly, some local jewelers are willing to ship to an outside appraiser and some won’t. If one of your objectives is to get an unbiased opinion about the stone and the price, you may be better picking it up and delivering it yourself so that the appraiser and the jeweler don’t even know who the other is. This avoids even the possibility of a conflict of interest.
