Prosaically Purple

Ok I confess that I am a little more than smitten with this stone. The color, the tone, the saturation all seem to change with the light and time of day. The following assault of images was taken indoors at night with incandescent and a mag light.

and that's when I noticed it. At first I thought it was scratches in the silver dish reflecting around inside the stone. then I thought I had scratched it when I wiped it with my eyeglass cloth. Then I got the loupe out and looked inside with the maglight. Silk?

So I slipped my really crappy loupe over the lens of my canon powershot sd950 point and shoot to get a closer look. I have nothing against this silk. I like the stuff. The stone is still IF at 10x I think since I had to go to 20x to find it and even then without the maglite at the right angle it wouldnt have shown up.

Yum! Looks like a grape jolly rancher to me. So pretty!

VapidLapid, the color on that is fantastic. Looks like an almost perfect classic purple with good saturation. I very much like this stone!

Gorgeous colour purple! It's going to look fab set in green gold - & I really look forward to seeing lots more pics of the ring making process as well as the finished product.

VL, I would read this thread for your captions alone "open the pod doors Hal" had me laughing so hard my son wanted to know what was funny - try explaining that to a kid. Really nice stone by the way and I love your ingenuity in being able to show the silk.

The silk makes me love that stone even more. What great photos! :appl:

Vapid, The stone has such depth and is lovely and will be awesome with the green gold I am sure! Can't wait to see the rest of the process!

ok Ive been doing a little work on making the setting, but first I had to see how the barely ring shaped gold blob looks with my amethyst in it. I like it so much I may do that right away next. So much purple you'd think I was Prince!

So back to the gold

The amethyst in the gold is really beautiful. I love that purple against all that metal. You should set your purple spinel in high karat yellow gold I think. It would really set it off nicely.

Keep in mind this is my own made alloy with no copper in it. if there were copper I couldnt treat it like this in open air.
even without the copper it is risky.

Yummy! I love the purple and gold together!

That is a beautiful spinel!! I have a purple spinel that is just about the same color (almost exactly the same size, too), and I love it so, so much.

Haven't had much chance to work this week, but this is where a little forging and controlled, directed melting/dripping has gotten me.

What a cool thread! I love seeing the process and the spinel is to die for. Reminds me of Grape Fanta!
EDIT: I reread what you named your photos and I sprayed coffee laughing so hard. I like "Houston We Have a Problem. " :appl:

Great photos and such a delicious color of purple. Congratulations on a beautiful stone.
