Hello all^^

I`m planning to propose to my girlfriend in the next couple of weeks, and I desperately need help finding the right ring. To be honest, I wouldn`t feel right buying anything online without hearing everyone`s advice first here - I was literally blown away with how much expertise that the members have. You`re advice will definitely not be wasted ; )

So, more to the point, my question is this: Is it possible to find a .7 ct, vs1/2 E/F diamond with ideal cut/light return for under $3000?

I have a Ritani mount in mind. Also I would say that, above all, I think that light return/cut and color would be the most important in my girlfriend`s eyes. Anyway, I am completely open to suggestions.

I really hope someone here can help...

Lists the range of parameters that PS usually recommends to narrow down the candidates. The HCA is under the Tools tab at top. Is a rejection tool. Low for score 2 or less; doesn't matter how much under 2. Possibly can go higher than 2, like 2-3 but then you start getting less cookie-cutter and into "has to be seen" Some leakage under the table on an ASET / Idealscope image is okay.

Then look through the Diamonds Search under resources tat, and look at In House only as 1st pass. See if any fit your budget.

If you just look at AGS graded diamonds that got 000 there's no need to run the HCA because you;ce already got top cut grade. It's the GIA Excellent ones than you have to check. Skip EGL b/c they are too soft on their grading compared to the other two labs. EGL can overstate color by 2 grades fr more and clarity by 2 and that is why some of those stones seem much lower priced than F VS from ASG or GIA: Because they are more likely H/I and in the SI clarity range and probably would not receive AGS 000 or GIA excellent for cut, either.

You could probably find some on blue nile or james allen, but it will be hard to verify their light performance besides just their HCA score.

Here's one that gets close and would absolutely be my recommendation since it comes from a reputable vendor with top-notch cut. The superb cut will also help it face up bigger and whiter and probably look alot better than a random E/F VS1 you find on BlueNile or a B&M.

Ask for the PS discount and you should be sitting right around 3k.

With that said, I found ones with potential on BN in case you absolutely have to have E/F. All of these have strong blue fluorescence, so you would need to check with a sales rep to see if they can confirm no negative effects (though it is rare to have negative effects).

Re: Proposing in a few weeks! Help me find the right ring!!

Wow, you guys are awesome! I apologize for not replying sooner - I live in Japan, and the time difference makes things difficult. Ok, so it looks as though I was dreaming regrading the size/specs. Actually, my girlfriend is Japanese, and her concerns are just the look of the ring - meaning light return and color, in her eyes. Anything that is not F or above simply won`t due. But I suppose I could settle on a smaller size, I suppose; it`s likely that I`m the only one concerned about it, because I`m American.

If it were under.7, would that make it easier to find something worth buying? Please let me know what you think. I absolutely appreciate everyone`s advice, btw^^

Here are 3 nice options, all above F color, at or below your budget (after Pricescope discount).

Any of these will be a winner!

.740ct, F, SI1

.654ct, D, SI1 (probably my pick, considering your specific situation)

.603ct, F, SI1

Re: Proposing in a few weeks! Help me find the right ring!!

If your girlfriend is Japanese, don't get her any SI1. She'll probably want a high color/high clarity combo stone. Have you checked some stores in Oitomachi if you live in Tokyo? I've heard good things about Takara Kiho. If you cannot find anything there, try online. The CEO of Whiteflash speaks fluent Japanese and knows about Japanese culture. Are you sure your gf wants a setting from Ritani? In Japan, most couples go shop for an engagement ring together. What kind of fashion magazine does she read?

I agree.

I'd go for an F VS1. Still affordable, but higher color and clarity that is valued in that area of the world.

Re: Proposing in a few weeks! Help me find the right ring!!

Hello all^^ First off, I`d just like to say once again how much I appreciate everyone taking the time to help - it makes me realize that there are still good people in the world ; )

Ok, again, sorry for the late response. I`ll try to clarify things as much as possible, and then hopefully I`ll be able to purchase something this in the next couple of days.

So, first of, I was actually quite a bit concerned about what my gf actually wants, so I simply asked her, against my better judgement. Actually, it turned out to be a good decision. For her (and myself, as well), as long as it`s eye clean, and the light return is high, that is apparently what`s important to her. So, SI1 is ok, as long as it`s eye clean. As for the color, she flat out said that she`d like it to be D or an E. Although, if I don`t think that she would really be able to tell between F or D...

The .74 diamond is nice, but actually, It's a bit aboove my budget. I like the size, but actually something around 2,500 or 2,800 would be more ideal, with the budget I have.

Gypsy, I like the diamond you picked out. If it were SI1, would I be able to find the same type of light return but with a larger size?

I'd really just like to blow her away with whatever I end up choosing - so much so, that I`m a bit worried about it; If I could wait and save, it would be so much easier, but we`ll be moving to the States early next year, and there literally is no time. We`ll have to pay for everything in terms of the wedding (some families, like her parents, just don`t believe in giving support in that way), which makes proposing more difficult here... Anyway, please let me know what you think. I absolutely appreciate it. I`ll be refreshing this page for the next few hours as much as I can.

Re: Proposing in a few weeks! Help me find the right ring!!

One other thing, the two of us were looking at "very strong blue fluoresence" stones, and I think they`re quite beautiful, as does she. Not sure if that would change what you would recommend. But, I was bit surprised how much character it seems to add.

Good info!

As far as value goes, that Brian Gavin stone really is the best choice. If you can put some extra money (there is a Pricescope discount, as well - you just have to ask) into the stone and go with a simpler setting, I might suggest that, as it is a killer stone!

Otherwise, here are a few other good options for you, with top-notch cut and high-color, all in your price range:

.60ct, E, SI2
http://www.highperformancediamonds.com/index.php?page=view-id-diamond-infinity-new&id=1045

.603ct, F, SI1 (has fluorescence, which you mentioned a preference for)
http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/0.603-f-si1-round-diamond-ags-bl-104069795003

.636ct, F, SI1
http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3043074.htm

Any of these would be a great choice!

Re: Proposing in a few weeks! Help me find the right ring!!

It's great to know that she is ok with an eye-clean SI1. Have you culculated the custom fees? You'll have to pay 14.2% (6.2% custom plus 8% sales tax) to government.

Re: Proposing in a few weeks! Help me find the right ring!!

Actually, I had heard about customs/sales tax being quite high mentioned in another post. If there is no way around it, I might have to have it shipped to the states first, then shipped here inconspicuously. I supposed it would depend on how much it ends up being. But, now that has added an even more impending doom in terms of how much time I`m planning to propose (by May 3rd) ; )

btw, here`s a .64 on James Allen, that`s only well within my budget and the size is alright. Is there anything ostensibly wrong with it? I`m by no means an expert, so please be easy on me if I`m way off.
