Took my ring to get it appraised for insurance and the appraiser said he had problems with ring itself. He said the prongs were not cut right, that more than 50% of the post was cut and is more like 75% making it more likely to break and he would have to note this on the appraisal. He also stated that when the ring was sized it was soldered instead of "melting" leaving the ring porous. He said these were not things that should be on a high quality ring. Has anyone ever had this problem?

Sorry I can''t answer but I hope someone will.

Good question. I''d be interested to know, as I prefer a really low set diamond.

This webpage here should help explain exact what your appraiser meant:

I had two really bad setting jobs done on my own diamond, and between the two of them they covered just about every single error listed on this page... pretty impressive actually!

The last reset was only a month or so ago and the diamond is already loose in the setting. I am awaiting the replacement mount so that I can finally get it done properly. I would consider having it looked at by a reputable jeweller and get the setting problems fixed, as you may be at risk of losing your diamond.
