Hi eveyone.. quick q... I''ve been doing a ton of reading etc, and still have a few minor q''s....

I''m in the process of finding a stone for my girlfriend (I already have the ring picked out), and need some help with the big part of this decision... ;)

Anyhow... measurements of stones for round diamonds... I''m looking at buying a 2.25 -2.5 ct round diamond. I know what size, color, clarity etc I want and can afford. I''ve got the percentages down for table / depth, etc.

Can someone please explain measurements to me? If a 2.25 stone had these measurements: 8.31 x 8.35 x 5.19 , does that seem right? What are those measurements actually of? And how far apart should they be before I should be concerned?

Thanks... Still trying to learn everything here... =)

Welcome.

Here is a handy chart you can use to check the diameter measurements of your contenders. Going by that - a 2.25 round should approximate about 8.6 mm. In a round diamond, these are the measurements of the outer edge, you want your measurements to be acceptably round i.e 8.31 by 8.34 etc just as an example, anything over .10 means the diamond is out of round i.e 8.31 by 8.43 - also in my opinion you want to keep the first 2 measurements reasonably close together, anything over about a .6 difference is pushing it. ( I hope my maths is right with the way I write the measurements!) Generally these measurements will be taken care of anyway in a top cut diamond. You want to try to hit the closest you can to the best diameter measurements to make sure the diamond looks as big as it should do for it's weight. Weight can hide in thick girdles, too much depth overall, so it is a combination of cut proportions and factors which need to be considered to make up a great cut quality and performance and the diamond being the right size for it's weight. The 5.19 is the mm depth measurement, we are normally more concerned with the percentage.

Thanks, that was exactly what i was looking for!

: 8.31 x 8.35 x 5.19mm

weight by calculation: 2.20cts

.04 variance of diameter is good and qualifies in an excellent cut

62.45 depth % qualifies for excellent GIA cut, range is 57.5% - 63%
