I'm looking for a round cut diamond around .5 carat for around $1000, which I found out give you a limited selection. I rather find something with a better cut and clarity then size. I prefer not to go into a big chain store and get sold on something that is not good quality, that why I am here.
How about these?

any suggestion would be great

Thanks

Here's an idea worth considering:

Since this is a promise ring and will eventually be replaced by an e-ring, have you thought about a slightly unusual stone that might work as a ring in the future?

Check out this AVR, right at your price point:
.35ct, H, VS1

This stone will have some unique charm to it, and if you intend on getting a MRB for the e-ring, will definitely be something different.

Thanks for the suggestion, don't think she'll like unusual stone.

At the size you're looking at you could drop down in color and get away with it I like jes allen because their simple solitaire is cheap and very pretty for the price I like the color and the fat arrows of that k. If you ask for a pricescope discount and pay by wire it would be cheaper than listed.

Can you tell the difference between j, k and g, h color?

Yes noticeable but at the size you're looking at color is less important. Cut is the most. It'll make the stone a little fireball. Color is less noticeable at stones that size. Let me ask, did you already have a setting? Because if you were just planning to get the plai solitaire, I'd stick it in the 6 prong cheap one in rose gold or yellow gold and it would looks bright and lovely.

I was going to get the setting at the same time in either white gold or rose gold. She doesn't like gold. Considering 6 prongs over 4 at the moment.

I think if you are getting this size stone and putting it in rose gold I see no reason you couldn't so a J or K colored stone. My ring is a k. I'll show you some pictures when I get home.

I think rose gold is a great idea. Rose gold is in now. It may or may not be as classic as white gold, or other white metals. But this isn't here e ring so it gives you a little range to be a little more, for lack of a better word, trendy.

Though I do think rose gold is classic.

Okay thank very much

my pick would definitely be the JA .44 J color Niel posted in a rose gold solitaire (assuming she likes rose gold), that one is perfect

Thanks for everyone who offered their input especially Niel

No problem.

Please come back with whatever you decide. I love dainty solitaires

With a diamond this small would a 4 or 6 prong setting will be better?

My suggestion would be to not purchase a promise ring and save the money for the E-ring that you plan to purchase some day. I've never really understood the concept of a promise ring because it seems like the money could be better spent when put towards the actual E-ring. Having said that, there have been some good suggestions here should you choose to go that route =)

Forgot to mention - have you looked on Etsy? I've purchased lots of unique (and good quality) jewelry items from Etsy, including some nice diamond stacking rings that would make lovely promise rings.

I'm not a promise ring person either. But sounds like it works for him.

Plus if you buy a james allen stone, you can use that as a trade in when you are ready to buy an engagement ring. Meaning all you're spending on the promise ring alone is the setting, because the money toward the stone will carry over to the trade up. (Assuming you pay double. But that's not hard with your budget. But read their trade in policy)

Buying on eBay doesn't allow you that. So if to think that he should be using his money for the e ring, it would be smarter to buy new with a trade in policy.

I think the 6 prong makes it look a little bigger and rounder, but I prefer the shank of that twisty one. So if they couldn't get a 6 prong is go 4 for it.

I looove the twisted rose gold shank for a promise ring

The stone is going to reflect some of the light around it, so if it is a rose gold then I do agree that a lower color grade will work. And as people will say over and over, if you have a really good cut stone it will show up whiter than a badly cut stone with a higher color grade.

Here is one to look at too.
