My future wife wants a Princess diamond. We've been putting things off for very long to 'save up' for several other things, kinda doing things a bit backwards. I want to put a halt to all of this and get her what she wants.

The problem is, she has a tendency to lose things, break things, drop things...you know - she's pretty active.

We are wondering if the Princess is ok for this type of person with their lifestyle. Seems like all the settings are not in her favor as the princess sits so HIGH up, and she doesn't want that. We have seen some decent settings but nothing 'perfect' like what she wants. A nice setting with side diamonds, not 3....probably 'a bunch' as per her. But all the settings I've seen are pretty high up and those 4 tiny prongs holding a quality 1 ct diamond is making me a bit paranoid.

ALSO - Both are families think I am taking things to the extreme as we have talked about diamonds with them. EVERYONE buys a mall diamond it seems. Nobody questions certs, and they got off FAR cheaper than people that purchase from say, whiteflash and buy a setting - not to mention, they can see it first and have a bit of help having it checked.

So I am just wondering and probably beating a dead horse here, what or why should I buy a 'quality' diamond over a mall diamond when all the stats match up the same. I want quality, I want to make sure it's hand picked and would love to be able to design the setting myself, but if she is going to lose the diamond or damage it, what's the point?

I guess I am just looking for some more guidance here since my last posting of questions.

btw what are still some of the better places to buy other than WF, GOG ?

EDIT: One last thing. What are Cushions? New? She might go for that especially if they are 'safer' to have. :)

you get her what she wants and then you buy insurance.

For princesses, see if Infinity has anything in your range.

A princess is perfectly fine for her, but she might want to consider a cut cornered princess as the corners are the most dangerous on a princess.

A cushion is actually an old cut, but doesn't have the same look as a princess. Run a search here and you'll see a bunch. I would go for a radiant over a princess for her if she likes the princess look.

I'm not even going to address the mall store issue. Run a search, it is a dead horse. Just suffice it to say that all the specs are in NO WAY the same and IF they were you would pay a LOT more from a maul store for the same stone.

Do yourself and her a favor, call Whiteflash, pick an ACA princess from them, and customize a setting so that the diamond sits low. Then compare it outside of a jewelry store to some of her friends stones and you WILL see the difference. I promise. And the look on their faces will be priceless...

THEN BUY INSURANCE!!! That's what it's for after all.

You might want to check out Whiteflash''s line of X factor princess stones. I just received mine from WF yesterday. It''s AMAZING! I can''t believe how much it sparkles and great the cut looks. My girlfriend is also very active, as she''s a teacher and plays/coaches multiple sports. She loves the square look stones and the X factor was a perfect choice for her active lifestyle. I compare the stone to my friend''s princess engagement ring and it''s very very similar. Depending on the prongs of a setting, the 2 stones would look almost identical except for the extra assurance of durability. I''d highly recommend the X factor, you and your GF will love it!

Here''s a link to the X factor page:

Ditto! Can''t agree more!

Yes, they are safe, but I might consider a cut cornered princess if you''re worried. And of course buy insurance.

A big ditto to what neatfreak said see WF about and ACA princess and get them to work with you to put together a low setting that protects the stone as much as possible. Good luck let us know what you decide and oh yeah if you don''t go with a princess then I''d look into a radiant or like another poster said explore the X factor clipped corner stones from WF as well.[:b

Have you looked at Peter Storm designs? He uses alot of princess cuts in his erings and his wedding bands and most are bezel set so they''re protected more from dinging, compared to prong settings.

V shaped prongs are safer than regular prongs, and you shoul definitely insure you ring. Jewelers mutual and chubb are the big names who specialize in this. Premiums aren''t that high, this is definitely something everyone should do.

The princess cuts from a place like WF will out sparkle and outshine the stones at mall stores and if you get one it will blow you away. "Pound for pound", or "apples to apples" they are much cheaper than mall stores. If mall stores carried high quality stores like the WF stones, they would be much more expensive than WF''s prices.
