With the help of a lot of you here at PS, I am very close to purchasing a diamond for an ER. I have a question that is very similar to the one that somebody else asked about why one diamond with similar characteristics from the same online site is being sold at such a wide discrepency of prices.

Here are the specs of the two diamonds:

Diamond 1:
2.21 F VS2
8.37 x 8.44 x 5.15
GIA Cert: Jan. 8, 2008
Cut: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Flour: None
Culet: None
Girdle: Th-M faceted
Table: 56.0%
Depth: 61.3%
PA: 40.8
CA: 34.5
Star: 55%
Cloud (not that big) & Pinpoint (pretty much in the middle of the table) additional pinpoints not shown

Diamond 2:
2.28 F VS2
8.43 x 8.47 x 5.19
GIA Cert: April 11, 2006
Cut: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Flour: None
Culet: None
Girdle: M-SLT faceted
Table: 56.0%
Depth: 61.4%
PA: 40.8
CA: 34.5
Star: 55%
Crystal in the middle of the table, needle at 9:00 on the crown facets

I know diamond 2 is bigger, but the price of diamond 2 is $5,000 more!! I just want to make sure I''m not overlooking something. I''m trying to figure out why Diamond 1 is so much cheaper. Both are from the same online store. Does anyone have any ideas? The first one has a very recent grade report? Haven''t diamond prices gone up? I would think that a more recent diamond''s wholesale price should have been higher. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your thoughts/help.

Are these stones both from the same vendor?

Are there pics of the actual stones online that you can post links to - perhaps with Ideal-Scope images etc?

The two stones are all but identical looking at the numbers - which makes Diamond 1 seem very attractive.

It would be helpful to get links to the actual stones as there may be a reason which can't be discerned from the stats alone. For example, perhaps the expensive diamond is a H&A and the other isn't?

*shrugs*

both diamonds are from blue nile. Neither are in the signature ideal line. Unfortunately, I don''t have any pics/idealscopes or any other images. Can anyone tell me what is going on in the diamond market right now with the U.S. likely in a recession? Due to flight to quality, commodities such as gold always increase. Do diamonds do the same? However, with the decrease in spending with a recession, is the diamond market not increasing as much as historic averages? Does the diamond market ever decrease?

Maybe the online database is out of date. They could have sold that diamond and not yet deleted it from the database. I have also noticed that sometimes the same diamond is listed twice, each under a different stock number and they didn't get the old listing deleted. Maybe the less expensive diamond is listed twice and you are looking at the old listing. Nothing pops out at me that would suggest why one is so much more. Is there a price per carat column you can compare? You'll probably just have to contact them and ask.

I asked BN why there was a big price difference. They said it was due to a large order from a certain cutter so they were able to get the order at a discount. Does this happen? These are both current listings. I''ve talked to BN about both diamonds and this was the reason they gave me. I''m not complaining, but this is a lot of money to me, and I don''t want to feel like I purchased an inferior diamond.
