Pricing on Chrysoberyls?

Photos seem to be significantly colour manipulated...?

I think the video is much closer to what you'd expect to see in person. And I don't understand how he can say that inclusion is insignificant, along with some other goodies in there, but perhaps face up it isn't as noticeable. Also, there is a sizable chip or natural on the girdle. Even if I hadn't had issues with this seller, it'd be a hard pass for me.

Thanks Gloria for looking! I did see this pop up on Instagram and I did not bite because I did not like the clarity. Clean except for this big inclusion over here that you can only see if you move the stone at all and look at it. lololol

I'd love for you to say more about how you can tell. I feel I cannot always tell and would like to.

I just browsed the shop. In most photos you can tell by the skin tone - the fingers are unnaturally red, a dead giveaway for post-processing oversaturation. Plus, when photos and videos make a stone look so different, there's definitely something off.

Yes I noticed the chip in the girdle too, I think it's a natural inclusion also.
No face up inclusions tho'

Can't comment about the seller, I don't know him except I know he was on another forum I used to browse. I think his prices are NOT low enough for me, there is no "score", I need to feel like I won something when I buy gems.

You will find your stone eventually, not to worry!

I understand, and it was very kind of you to link a suggestion! Also, I want to note that just because I don't love the stone (or the seller) doesn't mean others might not be happy with a purchase from him.

I also took a look and could not find a nice yellowish green chryso in larger size.
Tourmaline would be far cheaper for this color and you could even have it precision cut to specs you like.
I would be cautious of those that are poor alexandrites to avoid an unwanted strong color shift - like this one, which appears to be in the ballpark color you are after, but the description says it shifts to golden yellow (ie, likely brownish yellow). But also the shift is weak, seller says 10%. Hard to judge.

That's a good point... tourmaline is so affordable, even in larger sizes, that you (OP) might want to commission one from the likes of Jeff White (if you don't find exactly what you want). That way you can pick the color, size, shape, etc., and don't have to worry about windowing (which I know you despise). Jeff is very honest about what to expect. Very.

ETA: Or maybe even ask him about what he has for chryso material.

Really appreciate you looking for me too, TooMuchB!! I'll likely get another tourmaline, but will keep an eye out for my chryso. I want a stone I can wear a lot if I like without worrying much about chips (always some worry) because of its hardness. Appreciate your good tip about weak alexandrite!

I asked him about green chryso and he said he does not have any, but I am thinking he may have been assuming I meant vanadium. Will clarify.

This is mine. Is it the color you're looking for, or too yellow? (It was a one-off years ago from a hobbyist lapidary on etsy who doesn't seem to be selling anymore, so this won't help you find one; just posting to see if it's the color you mean.)

I love its glamour shot with the hershey kiss!

I think OP is looking for something decidedly green (medium tone) with a touch of yellow.

That is still slightly too yellow for me..but getting closer! Especially the middle picture of it. I like the cut very much!

I hate to say the "P" word but I was looking for a fairly fine peridot for something that I hope to post soon -- a pendant for a family friend. In larger sizes, there are some lovely and vivid almost-apple-green peridot. We went smaller -- 5 cts -- and those are almost universally the more classic yellow-green. But obviously not ideal if this were for a ring (as opposed to a pendant).

One 10-ct that Inken found in Tucson would make a killer pendant for us and I was briefly tempted -- but we weren't looking for ourselves and it was beyond the "gift budget" for our lower-end starter project.

You make a good point, Peridot looks similar especially the greens from Supat mine.

I have noticed peridot certainly. I do love its color. I have an old necklace with little periodot briolettes on it. But truthfully I am too scared to get a periodot ring, which is what I want this stone for. I can be a bit accident prone and I just think I am asking for trouble trying that. A pendant I would love to have at some point. Would love to see a picture of how your gift pendant came out.
I must say I love your definition of "going smaller" at 5 cts. is mine too. haha! I know you are specifically talking about peridot, but it made me laugh. My fingers need a large stone.

I, too, am a peridot lover... no shame in that! The really vivid, pure apple greens are hard to beat. No other gem shows that particular color. And I love that peridot is rarely, if ever, treated. A slight bit softer than our typical fare, yes, but a winner in my book nonetheless. I think it earned a bad rap with all that drab olive material which was so abundant in the 70's and 80's.

I remembered that multicolour.com had a really nice green chrysoberyl, but it looks like it sold or at least not listed anymore, so I dug up an old screenshot. Maybe this would not be yellowish enough for you. Price was about 3.5k/ct for 5ct, which is similar to the first stone you shared. I consider this seller to generally have very fair prices. This suggests a large, saturated, 'lab branded' vanadium chryso may be around that price point even if it lacks the more expensive bluish modifier.

Wow--I could forget yellow for that stone. It is a beauty!! Good point on the price. If the price is the same as a vendor in Asia (which is where the vendor of the first stone was), then there is little point in going to the trouble and risk of importing a stone from Asia. Thanks for posting this!!

I have been doing some more research on Chrysos tonight, both to learn and to look for good examples of my color. One thing I found that is in line with SSEF standards is this old post from Adamant (Did they go out of business? Their website seems to be broken. I hope not because I am very impressed with them not trying to get vanadium pricing for this stone with vanadium. Show integrity). It says even though a stone of theirs contained vanadium, they did not charge a vanadium price because of its yellow color.

I would be happy with that color, as with any of these. I really like the color on this concave stone, cut by Richard Homer. Seems he only does concave cuts. His website also seems inactive.

Then here are a few more where I'd be happy with the color. Though the last one may veer a little too yellow in person. Looks limey here. It's a fine line. All of this is to say there is a range of yellow-greens I'd be happy to own.

Here is a picture perfect vanadium chryso, posted by SSEF, along with the rough. I thought it was pretty neat to see. Only 5 cts were lost in cutting and it is a whopping 40 cts!
And finally, it seems that someone has been trying to sell the not great clarity-wise/quality-wise chryso since at least 2019. I also thought this was interesting, as well as the write ups and price history.

The ratio of vanadium, chromium and iron is important.

Very low iron produces the desirable bluish green color.

yellow to yellowish green is just chrysoberyl.

This is a video screenshot…

This thread is making me want to buy a v-chrysoberyl now. But the good one seems like selling at 10k+ per ct, its kinda crazy

sorry!

I own a small yellow chrysoberyl and I love it. The gem is very nice crystal and super sparkly. It’s crisp, which is something I really like in gems. I’d like a big one some day. And peridot too! Love that gem. My mom has a small one I got from another PSer about a decade ago ago. So richly colored.

I've been wanting a v-chrysoberyl for years. I just snagged what MIGHT be one on TRR (alerted by the SGBTP thread). It's about 2 1/4 carats, fairly pale, and not a great cut, but it looks to be the right shade of blueish green. Or maybe it has too much yellow for v-chrysoberyl. We'll see... (Apologies for the thread jack, Odyssey!)
