Hi Everyone,

I could really use your expertise. I have a 0.71 I VS2 Signature H&A from BGD. I was hoping to upgrade with them, but have run into a tangle.

Does anyone have any insight into why BGD's 1.2-ish J VS1s are so much more expensive -- thousands more -- than those from Whiteflash, James Allen, etc.? I am trying to talk to BGD directly, but feel like I'm getting a little bit of the runaround...

Examples of BGD's prices:

$9,246

$9,103

$9,291

$9,306

Examples from Whiteflash (ACAs):

$7,158

This 1.4 J VS1 is priced similarly to BGD's 1.2s?
$9,617

Examples from James Allen (True Hearts):

$6,670

$6,990
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.23-carat-j-color-vs1-clarity-ideal-cut-sku-969552

This is quite a disappointment as it really kills the possibility of an upgrade for me. Wishing I had gone with WF from the beginning...

:(

Thank you so much for any insight you can offer.

I'd previously heard that it could be impacted when/for how much the stone was acquired. Ex, you buy a stone 1 yr ago for $1000, and are selling it for $2000. Last week I buy a similar stone for $500, sell for $1000. Diamond prices have gone down recently (apparently?! I haven't noticed much with the Canadian dollar in the toilet), so that might be a factor.

Yes, assuming the diamond meets certain requirements, Whiteflash will offer a trade-in credit for your current diamond when you purchase a new diamond from them. I just went through it myself and it was a relatively easy process.

I emailed WF my GIA certificate. They gave me an estimate by email so I know the range to expect. Then I mail them my diamond for the final appraisal where they will give me a final price/credit. I will say WF's offer was better than other places I went to. But still, the trade-in value will not be as good as where you purchased it, BGD. I would say to get an initial estimate over the email first to see.
