Aww, why do these guys never come to the Boston area? *jealous*

Thank you MZ,
I am sorry about your parents. I can relate having much older parents myself.

thanks, TL.

Ooooh when and where?

Oh, I see I needed to scroll down. Thanks for the info. I hope to check it out!

might just have to visit the sis in SF that weekend :Up_to_something:

I was at a Roger Dery round table recently (in the past year, I think) and got to hold that stunning 32.77 ct asscher morganite. I see that it is listed as still available on his site. The gemstones were all a treat, and Roger was marvelous. Definitely worth clearing your calendar if you can make it. :cheeky:

This large Morganite was one of the first gemstones I ever shot for Roger. The photo was taken when I was still stumbling through learning how to use the camera - and I still am. There's always more to learn. A 32 ct beryl is a large stone.

Spectacular Jewel! Don't miss it if he still has it in stock.

holy moly! that is incredible!

Mozo: Thanks for the heads up. I will try to be there. Hopefully, I will get to see the amazing morganite.

Anyone interested in arranging a meetup around this?

i would be but can't commit.....elderly parent issues which means long term planning for anything is impossible.

however, if a time to meet is set i'd like to know in case i can make it.

You lucky people south of the border! I would crawl across broken glass (as Roger knows) to be able to hold that morganite in my hand. His other pieces don't look so shabby either :naughty:

I would crawl across Texas, all 900 miles of it, to get a head start to be there...if DH and I were healthy!

Be forewarned, Roger is more debonaire than that photo lends to.

Anyone going to this event?

and his gems are even prettier in person than in the photos. If you can possibly get there, just do it!

I'm most likely going around 5ish for the tail end.

I had the great pleasure of meeting precision cutter Roger Dery in person and looking at his gorgeous gems at Union Street Goldsmith in San Francisco this afternoon. I spent about two hours at the store and since I was there early, Roger had the time to personally show me 3 boxes worth of gems. The high light of course was the 32.77 ct asscher Morganite. I got to hold the fabulous gem in my hands. There was a even bigger 36 carat oval, but I liked the color of the asscher better. I snapped a few pictures, but I am not posting them as Jeff White has already posted a much better picture of the big asscher. I saw tourmalines of all colors; spess, tsavorite, rhodolite, umba, and malaya garnets, zirons in blue, brown, pink and various shades in between, sapphires, rubies, tanzanites, and a lot more. There was also a tray of rough gems and I had fun playing 'name that gem' with Mrs. Dery. She was wearing at least 20 to 30 color gems cut by her husband. The most interesting piece was a bracelet made up of individual bezel set color gems in various styles, each with a lobster clasp. They can also all together as a bracelet or a pendant with one or more stones. There are many possible color combinations. It is a very versatile piece and can be arranged to go with just about any color in your wardrobe. I couldn't walk away without buying anything, so I bought a 2.01 carat trillion cut Afghan mint green tourmaline which faces up like a 3 carat. I snapped a picture at the store, but it does not do the stone justice. IRF, the color is a lighter green. This was the first stone in the display case that caught my eye when I walked into the store, and after seeing so many, I ended up with this one.

While I was at the store, I didn't see anyone I know from Pricescope. I kept looking at ladies' hands for MoZo's big spess, but I didn't see it. I would like to thank her for posting about this event. It was a rare opportunity to see Roger and all his gorgeous gems in person. Both Roger and his wife were very gracious and store owner and sales personnel were very nice too. I had a wonderful time today, and I hope I was not the only one from PS who took advantage of this great opportunity.

I was there (and Roger mentioned another PSer showed up earlier and bought a trillion tourmaline). He said we were the only two who identified ourselves as PSers. Roger and his wife were really friendly and enjoyed showing me some spectacular gems. The guy from the Gallery of Jewels store was super-nice too. I saw a really nice asscher-cut green tourmaline as well as a big round green tourmaline, which I believe AN looked at too, and I wish I could have afforded them. But I walked away with a pretty nice oval sphene (I thought I wouldn't like sphene, but the dispersion was too cool to pass up, and it's nicely sized for a pendant). Also took a picture of the huge morganite on my hand (remind me to upload it tomorrow)!

Sounds like you both had a grand time! Love the bracelet picture, I'm always amazed at what people can come up with..so versatile!

Do post pics of the sphene...I'm still on that kick!

jstarfireb: Sorry I missed you, but I am glad you had a good time too. I missed seeing the sphene, so you have to post a picture. I will probably make a pendant out of the trillion mint tourmaline that I bought, but it will be a while before I get to it.
Hope to meet you in person soon, perhaps at the next GTG.

Largosmom: The bracelet is super versatile. I have some loose color stones collecting dust right now. I may make someting like that out of them.

I don't have pics of the sphene just yet, but stay tuned. It's a rich golden yellow with awesome dispersion. Cushion-ish oval shape, 1.71 ct, 7.2x6.2mm, and looks like a Portuguese cut pavilion (although I didn't ask him if that was actually the cut). It will eventually go in a pendant. I'll see if I can get some pics today.

In the meantime, here's the morganite on my hand...

Actually just checked his website and the sphene is there, so this will hold you all over for a bit...

I love the sphene! Did you get a price quote on the morganite by any chance?

If I remember correctly, the price listed for the morganite was $8600.

jstarfireb: Cool pictures with the morganite. Wished I had thought of taking such a picture. The sphene has a lot of dispersion and looks realy nice. Your recollection of the price of the morganite is correct. Wish I could afford it. It would make a stunning pendant.

Or maybe a doorknob! :cheeky:

Thank you, Art Nouveau and jstarfireb, for the report on the meeting with Roger Dery. How nice to meet Mrs. Dery as well. :))

I love, love, love the bracelet. I've been wondering about how to set some of my extra stones into a cuff, or something, but this idea is even better. You can bezel them as you have the funds and hang them from a chain as a pendant as well. Very clever and a great way to show off lots of colored stones.
