More good news - no signs of cancer after extensive ultrasound, no heart disease, no evidence of rupture. So it's idiopathic. We will try a low fat diet with rutin supplements and recheck fluid build up in 5-7 days. If this doesn't work surgery is still on the table. He's happy to be home!

Sorry to chime in late, but just saw this and I am so happy Dirk is doing well. One of my cats had chylothorax and had his chest drained a few times. My vet (this was over 25 years ago!) was so fantastic, sought out help from a top notch veterinary college, and put my cat on a low fat veterinary diet made by Science Diet. My cat lived for over 12 years after that, with no further problems or episodes. He died in his later years from effects of Hyperthyroidism.

What happy news Dirky is back home! Hopefully the diet and supplements correct the fluid build up. Please keep us updated on this sweet baby. I’m so relieved for you Gussie!

I am happy to hear that your kitty had a full life after the diagnosis. This gives me a lit of hope that it can be reasonably managed.

I think your boy will be good to go! :) If I recall correctly my kitty needed his chest drained 3 times over a couple of weeks until the vet ruled out everything possible and spoke with a specialist at a veterinary college. Once he was started on the low fat diet his symptoms improved dramatically and he was fine. My kitty's original symptoms started as a strange cough, then progressed to shallow breathing and resulting lethargy. I'm glad that your vet seems to be on top of this and already figured it out for Dirk.

Our 9 yo lab has a chest infection called pyothorax. His chest is full of pus and he was having trouble breathing. They drained what they could with a syringe and he is breathing better and is acting like his usual "cute dumb lab" self. He needs surgery to completely drain his chest though and to find the underlying cause of the infection. This type of infection is usually caused by a foreign body and he had a barb wire puncture to his chest a few years ago. The vet said it definitely could be from that. Unfortunately it could also be from cancer and our vet said that the prognosis would be very poor if so. Asking for prayers, dust, wisdom, etc.

@Gussie How's your sweet baby today?

He had a very good weekend. He has been eating very well and playing with the other 2 dogs. I thought at one time he was breathing shallow but I think I am a bit paranoid. My neurosis aside, I think he is doing well. He has to take 4 rutin pills 3 times a day so we have been feeding him the low fat food with the supplements. He scarfs it down, pills and all. I take that as a good sign since he has a healthy appetite. Hopefully he will gain some weight since he has lost quite a bit. He goes back for a chest ultrasound this week to see if fluid has built up. I am very hopeful this can be managed.

The other 2 pups are a bit jealous Dirky is getting fed 3x daily lol!

I'm glad Dirk had a good weekend and is taking his meds! My baby in my avatar has congestive heart failure and takes numerous pills. She loves pill pockets and runs to her pills and barks, demanding them! :lol-2:

The best news ever! Dirky had an ultrasound and it showed no fluid accumulation! We are beyond thrilled. He needs to go back in 3-4 weeks to recheck (or if signs of distress). Honestly, Google isn't always a good thing. I didn't expect to have such good news. I read that medical management for dogs has less than 30% success rate. Thank goodness diet and rutin seems to be working. Or his "leak" spontaneously healed. Either way, I will definitely sleep better tonight! So here is a pic of sweet Dirky. It's not the best pic but you can see his brothers in the background. 20220405_193130.jpg
