Dirky Dog is so handsome! Sending lots of positive vibes and ghost hugs to you both. It’s a difficult challenge as a fur mom balancing advanced care options with quality of life. Hopefully a specialist can give you the information you need to make the best decisions for your pup.

So sorry that you and Dirk are going through this. Sick furries are the worst and trying to make hard decisions is just plain awful. Our animals bring so much love and joy into our lives and it's so hard when they are ill. Thinking of you and your sweet dirky dog and hoping that you hear something hopeful from the specialist.

Bit of an update. The specialist thinks that Dirky has chylothorax instead of pyothorax. It isn't well understood in dogs unfortunately but can be managed medically (somewhat). They drained almost 2 liters of fluid from his chest and he was acting like a puppy again! They did not see any glaring
evidence of cancer on the xrays of his chest after the drain. They kept him overnight to see if fluid builds up quickly and monitor him. Tomorrow they will do several tests to look for any other cause (cancer, thoracic duct rupture, heart failure, etc). Dirky was kicked pretty hard by a cow a few weeks ago and a rupture is a definite possibility. Almost half of chylothorax cases are idiopathic though. I am feeling better about his outcome but of course still worried.

Thank you for your kind words and thoughts. Maybe add a prayer for a lottery win would help too!!!

Nice try! Get in line, sister! :lol-2: Furbabies are more costly than human kids!

I'm happy that your little Dirky is getting better. That cow kick sounds brutal, poor baby! Sending you all the best, and a little pixie dust for a "reasonable" vet bill.

I responded with hearts… Hearts aren’t exactly what I wanted to convey but I’m SO glad to hear he’s doing better today after the fluid was drained!! Please keep us posted on tomorrow’s scans and tests!! ❤️

Ouch being kicked by a cow
Never mind lotto - sell the cow to the butcher

Glad to hear it's not the big C. Hope he has a swift recovery and can get back to his usual self. And yes, pets are so, so very expensive. But dammit we love em so much. Good thing you're cute, Dirk!

I'm glad you are getting answers quickly, and that this may be manageable (getting appointments in this area can take weeks, and it's either that or waiting for hours at the emergency vet.) But man!, a run in with barbed wire and then a kick from a cow, maybe it's time Dirk retires as a ranch hand!

I really like the vets so far and am pleased with their sense of urgency.

Lol, Dirky's problem is probabky more that he isn't experienced in ranch living. He's basically a pampered city dog. The handful of times he's been to the ranch, he was crazy excited though! So excited that he must have thought the calf he was trying to play with was just an overgrown dog. Until his mama got there.

More good news - no signs of cancer after extensive ultrasound, no heart disease, no evidence of rupture. So it's idiopathic. We will try a low fat diet with rutin supplements and recheck fluid build up in 5-7 days. If this doesn't work surgery is still on the table. He's happy to be home!
