Our 9 yo lab has a chest infection called pyothorax. His chest is full of pus and he was having trouble breathing. They drained what they could with a syringe and he is breathing better and is acting like his usual "cute dumb lab" self. He needs surgery to completely drain his chest though and to find the underlying cause of the infection. This type of infection is usually caused by a foreign body and he had a barb wire puncture to his chest a few years ago. The vet said it definitely could be from that. Unfortunately it could also be from cancer and our vet said that the prognosis would be very poor if so. Asking for prayers, dust, wisdom, etc.

We haven't scheduled the surgery yet. We are getting names of specialists tomorrow. And we are thinking very carefully about it. It is a hard surgery (completely open chest). The thought that it has a reasonable chance of being cancer and going through a hard surgery and recovery during his last days is overwhelming. We are desperately hoping the specialist can give us more information on the likelihood of it being cancer vs. a foreign body. I am seriously praying for an answer.

Aww hope your lovely boy will be alright @Gussie, it's awful when they're ill. Sending lots of love your way, give him a gentle pat from me.

Praying for Dirk...

Mega dust and prayers for your boy Dirk

Sending all the warm thoughts and hugs to you and your fur baby.

What a sweet boy @Gussie I hope Dirk will be okay. Big hugs to you..

I'm so sorry. Can't the figure it out by some kind of x-ray or MRI if it's a foreign body without opening up his chest?

An X-ray would be okay.. If they don’t know what it is an MRI could be dangerous in case it’s metal.

A big handful, a kiss and a hope that they find a less invasive way for Dirk, The Good Boy.

Did his regular vet do a full blood panel?

Sending buckets of love and healing dust.

An xray was how the infection was initially found. His wbc was normal and no fever, so weird. They didn't see a tumor or anything though. I am hoping the specialist may have further diagnostics. If it's a foreign body, it may not show as it can be something like a blade of grass. They don't even find the foreign body a lot of times.

All blood work normal, no parasites. They checked chemistry, hematology, endocrinology, urinalysis. Has lost significant weight in the past year.

Thinking of you and Dirk.

If it helps at all, when I first got my doggo, her vet found a "starburst" in the xray of her leg. It had a 95% chance of being cancer with a slim chance of being an infection. Turns out we got "lucky" and she actually has valley fever. She's still taking meds for the long-term. But otherwise she's healthy as can be. It's been almost 3 years since her diagnosis.

As a kitty mom to three, one with intestinal cancer, I know how things seem to move in slow motion when you are worried about a pet. So the best advise I can give is to not be afraid to ask your vet for multiple specialist options, if available. Call them all for pricing and soonest appointment, you can always cancel an appointment if you find another one sooner. Don't forget that some veterinary colleges have small animal clinics associated with them that may be open to the public.

And most important, try not to panic and imagine the worst.

Prayers for Dirk!
