Plus size and non traditional dresses?

Hi all,

Although my FI and I do not have a date set yet (after 4.5 yrs of engagement), I still like to look for ideas for my eventual dress.

I am plus sized. I will need (currently) a UK size 26-28 dress. Also, I am looking for something unusual. While a white dress would be awesome, I just can't see myself in one. I would love something more fitting to my personal image. I am a rock/goth inpired dresser, so something in black and red would be awesome.

Has anyone here had a similar dress styling/sizing?

Could you post links/pictures of your dresses if you have?

Please also post pitures of you in your plus sized white gowns, it would be nice to see what IS available.

IMO, if you love red and black, then wear red and rock it. However, if you want to wear red just to be different from all the white brides, then go with something else because the "I''m wearing a red wedding dress to be unique" look is definitely not unique anymore. I forget who it was, but one of our posters wore a light greyish green dress and looked gorgeous. I''ll see if I can find who it was.

I know what you mean. Red is a very popular colour choice over the last few years.

So while it might not be as alternative as my taste would be, it would be more comfortable than white.

I never wear white, let alone dresses...so a white wedding dress inspires fear in my poor heart.

I would love a black dress with a red twist if I had a first choice. I just don''t know what style dress would suit me. I have a very large bust, but also a huge "tyre" round my middle so most dresses are NOT flattering to that shape.

I only started dress shopping a few weeks ago and I was putting it off as I wanted to lose more weight prior to trying them on. Unfortunately that didn''t happen

so I had to go anyway and I was so surprised how flattering the dresses were on me. You should go shopping and try on all different types.

I would love to go dress shopping, but I don''t know if local bridal shops stock very large gowns.

You really will be surprised at what will look flattering. I love dresses that are kind of clingy and I thought they''d look awful on my big posterior but they looked fab! Give a call around. I know in Dublin quite a few of the shops did plus size.

I totally disagree! I''ve seen these dresses on brides of many sizes and shapes and I have to say that many of them are more flattering on the non-twig women. Give em a try at least.

Where in the UK do you live? There are some shops that specialise in larger sizes only.

I''m confused about if you want the typical bridal gown shape, just red and black, or if you want a red and black outfit without the bridal gown look. I know of someone who wanted green and white and ended up with a custom made white corset and green skirt. I don''t remember the colours of her shoes, and hat & veil, but one was green and the other was white. It fit her personality and was beautiful, and wasn''t quite the typical bridal gown shape and style.

I would love something that was a definite bridal style, just not white! Unless, of course, I found the most amazing and flattering white gown. Modern gothic inspired gowns are a big contendor. Nothing TOO fussy as it would just add bulk.

I found this one, also a bridal gown, it''s from a plus size bridal shop in hampshire http://www.plussizebridal.co.uk/plus-size/find-us.html and says that it''s available in 46 different colours and up to size 30. The designer of this one is Alexia Designs.

I have a friend who is a wedding photographer in Bournemouth. I'll ask her if she knows where some of her less traditional brides get their dresses if you're still looking when I speak to her in a couple of weeks. I can't seem to find any plus sized speciality shops in Dorset on the internet right now.

I got married in a deep red dress - fitted bodice etc! I LOVED it! There's an Ebay shop that sells Goth inspired dresses and I know somebody who bought their wedding dress from there. Here's the link:

Everything is hand made and if you find a dress you like it looks (from their adverts) that you send them measurements and they make it for you!

You can only see the top, and it isn't a bridal dress, it's Amy Lee from Evanescence...

LOVE this look. I would change the holes and bars on the front...but the general style is great. I love the layering of the black lace under the red straps. I can only imagine what the shirt would look like!

Neatfreak - That second white dress...I am SO drawn to it, even though it has longer sleeves and I generally prefer capped/shrug sleeves like the others I posted, or straps! Something about that lace across the front above the neckline is so pretty.
