I love this ring. I just need to make sure I'm getting a great deal too. ;))

The specs... (GIA Certified)

Center Cushion 1.53ct Color J Clarity VVS2 Cut Very Good
Side Stones 1.37ct (combined) Color J Clarity VS1 Cut Very Good

The metal is Platinum. It was hand made.

He is asking 10K for this ring. Is that a bargin? Can I do better at that price point?

Please help this helpless newby...

I though earlier you said they were J color? I think for F color it sounds like a very good deal.

Thanks it was a typo. They are J color.

Ok, I do think it sounds like a fair price, even for J color. But it they were F I think it'd be one of the screaming deals you'd be crazy not to take. I figure the center diamond goes for 7k, the side stones another 2k and a handmade setting like that goes for another 2k. So a rough estimate to make from scratch is 11k = good deal.

It sounds like a fair deal to me. For 1.8 carats total of J cushion cuts, I dont think you can match the stones and setting for less than that.

Thanks. It is actually 2.99 ct total weight.

Have you seen it is person? The cut on the cushions looks ok in the pictures. Will you be getting it appraised by someone qualified to assess the cut quality of the rocks? To me, it is only a deal if you pay fair market value for the secondary market AND if the diamonds are indeed what they are purported to be AND they are well cut! Anything else is a waste of money to me.

Note that GIA does not grade cut quality of fancies, so you should find out where this cut quality information is coming from and verify it for yourself.

I have seen the ring in person. It is stunning. The jeweler who made the ring is selling it on consignment. The jeweler said he made this ring for a couple six months ago. Unfortunatly for the couple, 3 months after the proposal the relationship ended. He tells me he sold the couple the ring for 15K. The owner of the ring has asked the jeweler to help him sell it to recover as much of his losses as possible.

He wants 10K but I'm thinking if I can get it for 8-9K, it might be a GREAT deal. On Monday, I will ask him for the GIA report.

Before I buy, I plan to get an independant appraisal. Is there anything else I should be conserned about? Any speedbumps I can expect?

Thanks,
John

Re: Please tell me if this is a good deal. $10,000 is my ma

The main things to take care of are:

1. Take the ring to a qualified independent appriaser who can verify that the stones match the certs. It should be relatively easy based on the clarity plots.

2. If it were me, I would make sure the ring had a 2 week return period and then I would send it to a PS recommended appraiser who is qualified to assess the cut quality of the stones. If you have not trained your eye, so to speak, you may not be able to recognize if these are well cut cushions or not. The fact is that all diamonds look "great" when they are clean, even ones that are not well cut, because diamonds are pretty and white and sprakly generally speaking. BUT if you were able to compare a two cushions that vary in cut quality then the difference might be really apparent to you and you could regret buying a diamond that you later learn is not cut for the best appearance and light return. Yes, beauty is the eye of the beholder to a degree, but if you have only even seen one woman, she will look pretty good to you no matter what ;))

3. Haggle on price. The secondary market should be around 30% - 50% of retail. If the ring retailed for $15k then I would be aiming to pay no more than about $7k - $8k to start. Look on Craiglist and get some information about the secondary markey and go in armed with that. No matter what the vendor says, it will not be an easy sale for him to pass this ring along -- most people are afraid of the bad karma of a ring from a failed marriage and also most people do not have a 10k budget. So go in informed and armed with some comps and see what you can manage regarding price.

4. Make sure you gave a refund period on the sale of at least 2 weeks to allow you to be sure that you are happy with the ring, and to allow you to get it appraised etc. Get the refund policy in writing and it should be a NO questions asked. If they are not comfortable with offering a refund period, then I am not sure I would progress with the sale.
