I am doing a diamond upgrade through a popular online site that has very good and Astor cut diamonds.

I wanted to spend between 4500 and 5000 to get the wife a 1+ carat diamond. I picked out the following diamond: Stock Number: LD09948898 (search on Blu Nile)
With GIA: 2185953323

I placed my order and sent off her ring. I sent the ring off for rodium plating and thats what I told my wife. She found out about the upgrade and stated the diamond looks hazy (bottom of diamond in 360 view). I think it is the camera but most of the diamonds on the website look more crisp. I talked with the seller and they said it is a very nice stone as it is vvs2.

Any help is greatly appreciated to ease our minds or have me switch the stone.

Thanks,

Hi Nevon, how sweet of you to do that for your wife! i love that you wanted to surprise her =)2 i do have to agree with your wife, it does look hazy on the video. As a VVS stone though, it shouldn't be hazy due to inclusions and there is no fluoro to be causing the haze. It could just be a poor video or it could be the cut. i'm not seeing a lot of sparkle and flashes as the stone turns. Can you swap it with another stone?

I'm not GREAT with princess stones but these do look nice as an alternative

Thanks for the reply. I was updating the post as you must have been posting.

My wife thinks it is the diamond because almost all of the diamonds flash and sparkle.

I really like this diamond:

Thanks for the quick response!

I was literally about to post that one. Can they give an ASET image? I also like the second stone posted by @farrahlyn. I would put these and the one you selected on hold. Ask for ASET images. That will help us better select between them.

What setting does your wife presently have and what size (in mm) is her current stone?

I called Blue Nile and spoke with "Ben". Ben stated he thought the video/picture of the diamond had an issue with the camera. Ben stated he was going to talk with the QA team about the diamond. I also had Ben look of the first diamond @farrahlyn mentioned and he was going to put it down as one I was interested in.

My wife has this engagement ring:

https://www.bluenile.com/build-your-own-ring/diamond-engagement-ring-18k-white-gold_17384

with a similar wedding band soldered to it. Blue Nile does not carry the ring/setting anymore.

This is the diamond my wife is trading in:

https://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD02231987

GIA Report:

https://www.gia.edu/report-check?reportno=2131627282&s=1535136067158

Diamond was .73 Carat 5.20 x 4.97 x 3.55 mm

As far as the ASET images go is it something BlueNile has on file and is it something that is free?

Thanks,

Nevon

The first stone (1.07) was my favorite as well!! doubtful BN will get an ASET but they won't start offering unless people keep asking. That second stone (1.04) is also posted on another site for less. FYI - blue nile will price match

Thanks for the info!

I will keep that in mind. The person "Matt" I set up the initial order will be working later today so I will probably call him and see what he says.

So i'll tell you something they won't tell you. When you have a stone that is not well cut, it will be less crisp looking. That 1.07 that i posted, see how the chevrons are crisp and flash at you as it spins?

take a look here and you can see that the center of the stone is fairly crisp but other than that it falls flat and looks mushy, muddled and not crisp. this is due to cut.
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/0.72-carat-h-color-vvs2-clarity-sku-5306459

It's hard to tell with that BN video if the stone has that fuzzy, non crisp look due to subpar cut or if its the video that is just bad. color and clarity arent everything, the cut of the stone is going to determine if the facets are crisp due to excellent light return or if it's a poor cut, it will just not reflect light enough to have that crisp and lively look.

Thanks for you fast replies and time you have put into this! I totally see what you are saying. That kind of looks like the diamond I originally selected. I will ask about the ASET images. My guess is he will not provide the images as I see the overpriced ASTOR diamonds have the images next to the GIA Cert.

Agree with @farrahlyn. But, BN usually provides ASET for princess cuts (they just don't provide anything for rounds). It should be free. By having the ASETs, it will let us verify if the stone is poorly cut or if the video is off. And, its puts all the diamonds on a level field in terms of light return. If they don't have aset, i'd be included to exclude the one you initially posted.

On your wife's setting, I'd highly recommend that she consider replacing the 4-prong head with a v-prong head. I can't find one on BN, but these will protect the corners of the diamond much better. Second choice would be double prongs.

This is what the ring looked like.

They were also Platinum with a band around or just under the girdle.

@rockysalamander i had no idea they would provide an ASET for princess cut stones, that's good to know!

you're welcome! BN videos are hard to tell sometimes if it's the video quality or not. Definitely get the ASET on the stones you're interested in, that will definitely help us make sure you have a nice stone. Her previous ring was beautiful!! Have they suggested an alternative setting since her previous one is unavailable?

Thanks,

No way she would get rid of the ring and band. They are swapping the head/main diamond and keeping the same ring. They are also redoing the rhodium. So far they have been great to work with and she has had the ring since 2011 with no issues.

I will call and "try" to get the ASET images.

Well I called and they CAN NOT provide or DO NOT have the ASET images on the princess diamonds.

Soo long story short 19 mins on the phone they are sending me the original diamond I picked set in her ring today with Saturday Delivery. I was not suppose to get the ring until August 30th.

BlueNile "Matt" completely blames the video as it was uploaded from a third party. The video according to Matt is at the wrong angle and not focused. Matt says he is GIA Gemologist and "the only way to decide is to see it in person as photos will not do it justice" (I asked for photos). Matt stated he looked at the diamond I picked (not in person as they are not in the same building) and thinks it will look better then the first diamond @farrahlyn picked (we will see).

Matt talked about the diamond being a great price compared to similar diamonds (4,850) and the stats on the diamond are great. But we all know if its too good to be true it probably not true. What do you guys/gals think about the price?

Biggest thing is Matt is a salesman who has skin in the game. So tomorrow afternoon I will see it and post you guys/gals some photos. The 1st diamond @farrahlyn posted is going to be held for me in the event this one is not going to work.

Thanks for all the time and effort for me just joining the forum as a newbie.

Does not sound like an option. Good thing USAA will have my back if she wrecks it ;)2.

Well a little late on the update due to work. The ring never arrived and when I go onto Blue Nile it states the ring will be shipped Aug 31 and Arrive Sept 1.

Not sure what is going on. Will see if "Matt" calls me on Monday.

Looks really good I feel that the video did not do this diamond justice. Will have to see what the wife think tonight. I posted some pictures taken off with my iPhone. Please let me know your honest opinion on if I should swap for that other diamond. Thanks a bunch. I am going to take a few with my dslr tonight and will put them up here.
