Hi everyone. I recently purchased a diamond from JA. Everything looked good on paper; HCA 1.4. Now that I have the diamond in my possession, I’m not certain it’s a good one. Please take a look and tell me what you think. One think I noticed, it’s very silver in certain light. Not white.

I’ll attach the GIA and some pics.

@lovedogs, @flyingpig, any thoughts?

I’m still in the return window at JA, although I’d really hate to go through all of that if this is an acceptable stone. Honestly I am so new to this, I just don’t know.
Thank you in advance

I’m in an almost identical situation. I’m debating between two JA True Hearts diamonds, 1.07 and 1.08. One of them has identical angles as yours, 35/40.8, and it’s super sparkly and lively, so I’m guessing yours is too! My other one is a 34.5/40.8, and it doesn’t outshine the other but I’m more confused about if I should pay $170 more for a color upgrade.

I also compared them to an AGS 000, and the 35/40.8 held its own with that stone as well. So having said all that, I’m no expert at all, but I’d say as far as performance is concerned, you have a really good diamond.

What was the price?

Hi I’ve seen your posts also! I thought you did trade in your 35/40.8 diamond. Do you have both diamonds now? I’m so confused as to what I should be seeing. My diamond is sparkly however it goes dark or more grayish in certain light. How about yours?

What about the stone is worrying you? On paper and in the videos it looks good, but you have to love it.

I don’t really know, tbh. I think after I purchased and saw that 35/40.8 is not good, I began to panic. I’m such a newbie, but thought I did thorough research on specs, however missed that important detail about CA & PA.

Oh no, it's definitely not true that 35/40.8 is "bad". Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. But in your case the stone looks lovely to my eye so if you love it then I wouldn't worry at all

Thank you @lovedogs. I always appreciate your input on these posts. I do think my diamond looks pretty and is very sparkly. Would would I see if a 35/40.8 didn’t work well? Just out of curiosity.

I have both now, and I need to decide by Friday and I am driving myself crazy. The whole reason I sought out a different diamond was because of my fear of the 35/40.8 combo. I can honestly say the 34.5/40.8 does not have better performance (at least to my aging, non expert eyes). Trust me, I have examined them so closely in every possible light, lol. I have taken them to stores and restaurants as well.

To answer your question specifically, yes, all 3 that I have compared go dark in certain lighting. They get very dark gray but throw sharp flashes of rainbow fire. Also, the one that I have set, I clean daily by soaking it in warm water and ammonia and then use a toothbrush. It’s crazy how even a little bit of dirt makes it look drastically different.

I’ve also noticed they look silver in some lighting.

I was told by the experts on here that some 35/40.8 are just fine, and thankfully we both have good IS images to verify they aren’t leaking. I’m so glad you posted and voiced your concerns. It helps to know that I’m not completely crazy. I still can’t decide between the two I have.

Thank you @Heidibrooke for quelling my worry about all of this. I hope you can make a decision about your diamond soon! Both of your diamonds look so close , and the one set, which I’m assuming is the 35/40.8 is gorgeous!

All of this diamond hunting has been quite stressful. My fiancé thinks I’m out of my mind! Lol. He let me do all the research and choosing of the diamond.

He sounds like a great guy! So much better to pick out what you like and have no regrets.

Is your diamond set really low? Mine is so low, I have to use a loupe to see the culet. Also, they covered 4 of my arrows. These are things they can easily change. Just wondering if you are happy with how they set your diamond?

It looks fine to me. Just understand that diamonds will look different in different lighting. They aren't sparkly all the time. I color is going to be less white and bright than an F, too. So you likely just need to get used to your stone!

I don’t think my stone is set low. I went with a very basic 6 prong platinum setting. Have you decided on what stone you’re keeping?

I think you’re right. I saw a g color, SI1 in my search. It looked nice but would like to post it and see what everyone here thinks.

I haven’t decided yet. I’m giving myself until Friday. Monday is my deadline to return. I’m hoping we get some decent sunshine Friday, so I can compare them in direct sunlight. I see you have found another contender. I haven’t looked at it yet. How long do you have to decide?

I just received my ring last Wednesday so I have a little bit of time. I just don’t want to have to keep looking. It’s so time consuming. Lol. I do like the look of this diamond I found but want to make sure the specs look good. JA couldn’t proceed the Aset on it though. That makes me uncomfortable.

You can always purchase Aset and take pics and post them here. Or you can choose True Hearts for a piece of mind. If you do not love the diamond or if something about it will make you question it, I would keep looking even if it is a hassle.

Did you run the G through the HCA tool? I’m glad you have a bit of time to decide. It’s definitely overwhelming to keep looking. How important is clarity and being mind clean to you? I ask because your original choice was a VS1. I think your diamond is beautiful. I’m sure its sparkle is much the same as my G because they have very similar proportions.

I asked for ASET images also and was told they weren’t available but they assured me the IS image is a great source for viewing the light return.

I ran it through and it scored a 1.2. I was a bit worried about the SI1, but not as much now. The G color is really nice but I don’t think it looks as symmetrical in the cut as my current stone. Even the JA person pointed that out when comparing my stone to this one. What was the HCA on your 35/40.8 diamond? Mine was 1.4

I do find it annoying that JA doesn’t just post the certificate. I hate having to keep asking to see one...ah, I just don’t know if I’m overthinking. Everyone that has seen my diamond has said it gorgeous, even customers where I work who don’t know I just got it. I’m at a crossroads...

It truly is so hard. Personally, I think if you are getting compliments from people who don’t even know you just got your ring, that has to mean it’s very eye catching. I don’t know how much plays into the “true hearts” brand, where symmetry is concerned but I would have to think it helps the performance somewhat.

My G scored 1.4 and the F scored 1.3.

Truthfully after looking at your post with both diamonds, I honestly think your original one in the setting looks so gorgeous. I don’t see any difference. I think also you can see your arrows better in the G color better, too. But whatever you decide, both will be great diamonds.

Have you ever ran your stones through StoneAglo’s free cut check? Mine scored a 9 out of 10. That may help with your decision.

You don't need to run it through anything other than the HCA. But I knew those numbers on the G were good. I think it looks good. I am just always uncertain when a grading report says clouds not shown (on the clarity plot). See if their gemologist can look at the stone if it is in NY. But I do think you need to bump up the color a grade or two. I think the I color is bothering you.

I like the I VS1.
The G SI1 has unevenly cut pavilion and inclusions that can cause milkiness.

Thanks for you input @flyingpig. Even with my very amateur eye, I thought the pavilion looked off.

Thank you! I’m leaning toward the G. I was told the F has more light scattering and @flyingpig knows his stuff and I trust his judgement. He also likes your I VS1 best, and I agree with him on that. It’s a pretty diamond.

I have never heard of StoneAglo’s free cut check.
