Hi everyone,

I am new to this board and totally new to diamonds. Well, my boyfriend proposed. We chose this ring together: http://www.bluenile.com/diamonds_details.asp?__fun_frm=i&track=btntext_viewselect&elem=img&pid=LD01297491&filter_id=0#grading_report

Please let me know your thoughts on it. It sparkles like crazy and everything is great w/it, except I can see what looks like a little bubble from the side view. I called BN before purchasing and asked if it was eye clean and they said yes, but now from reading here i see eye clean only refers to the top of the diamond, which looks great. I guess I should have read here first.

I also got a 4 prong and not a 6. I love the stone and don''t want to return it, but this little bubble thing bugs me. I was thinking if i got a 6 prong ring that it would be less noticeable. Thoughts?

Also, if I do change the setting, should I return the entire ring to BN to have them reset it or should I just purchase the six prong ring from them and have another jeweler do it and then return the 4 prong ring to them?

I attached a bad pic with my cell phone camera. Sorry for so many questions and thanks for your help in advance.

No one but you ever see a side view. Diamonds are not cut to be admired from the side. The "bubble" is very likely some reflections of faceting on the diamond and nothing to do with any intrnal characteristic. You are far from the first to have this exact problem crop up.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess I was just doubting my purchase.

It looks like a beautiful diamond to me - both from the website info and from your photo. I bet it''s stunning: mine is also an AGS0 and I LOVE it!!! It out-sparkles anything I''ve ever seen - and I bet yours does too. :)

As David said it might be a girdle reflection you are seeing from the side (if you search PS for ''girdle reflection'' you''ll get loads of info and photos).

Even if it''s just a little inclusion, I really wouldn''t worry if you can only see it from the side... you are the only person that will ever notice it. :) In fact, there are some ladies on here who LOVE their inclusions and think of them as the stone''s natural characteristics. Because they know their own diamond so well, it is the inclusions that mean they know they have their own diamond back after cleaning/polishing etc... which is nice peace of mind.

You both did an awesome job in choosing such a great stone with an amazing cut... so relax and enjoy it!

PS. Even Internally Flawless diamonds have inclusions... it''s just you need more than a 10x loupe to see them - so no diamond is truly perfect!

Thanks, Cleo. I really appreciate your kind words.

Your stone is absolutely stunning! I notice yours is also 4 prongs. I wonder if it''s even worth switching from a 4 to 6 prong setting. I was just thinking of switching to a 6 prong setting so this little bubble would really not be noticeable. Thoughts?

Thankyou, and you are welcome!

My diamond says it likes you too

Personally I chose the 4-prong setting so that I could actually view more of the diamond from the side - because I like gazing at my diamond in profile. :)

If you think that you would be happier with a 6-prong, then go for it. I kind of suspect that you might just find yourself squinting between the smaller gaps of the 6 prongs until you spotted that ''bubble'' again anyway - but only you can know that for sure!

If it was me, I probably wouldn''t bother. Spend the money on buying an ultrasonic cleaner and indulge yourself in cleaning it obsessively instead! :)

I promise you that no-one will ever know, and no-one will ever see what you see... but it''s your ring and only you will know what will make you happy.

Some great pics of girdle reflections here btw:

Actually, it''s not a girdle reflection. Hmm, maybe it''s a knot? I don''t know.

I should get it appraised and maybe they can tell me.

Thanks!

I think the grading report shows a little cloud and some small inclusions if I remember right: it could be any of those.

Do you have a loupe? You can buy a 10x loupe quite cheaply and then just match what you see to the grading report. :)

Check out this pic, I believe these may be crystal inclusions, does the inclusion on the side of your diamond look like those little ' bubbles?' Also it isn't unusual to see something from the side, particularly in SI clarities. But it may be possible to have the diamond reset in a 6 prong setting, and have the stone positioned so you can't see the inclusion so much near or by a prong.

I just cleaned my ring with some jewelry cleaner and the spot actually looks a little smaller. Not sure if it''s in my head, though.

I will try to take a pic from the side and get opinions on what it may be, b/c it''s not a crystal either (I don''t think).
