Ok, I got the engagement ring picked out, now I need the center stone. Unfortunately the ring was an expensive but beautiful Tacori, so I have less money than I had planned for the main diamond.

To look good in the ring, I need a 5/8 carat to 3/4 carat round diamond.

I am very picky about seeing imperfections. I really dislike the diamonds that I see in rings with all the black carbon or cloudy look due to too much feathering, etc. But, if I can't see the flaw with my naked eye, I really don't care how flawed it is. So, I guess that is a VS2/SI1 range that I'm interested in.

It'll be a white gold ring, but my GF and I thought the color 'I' looked best. We couldn't see the difference between 'H' and 'I' in the setting. I may have to go for a 'J' to fit the budget though.

I put those parameters into the pricescope price search and there is just too much variance in the pricing ($1000-$3500). I assume that has mostly to do with the cut. Knowing my GF, the ring will likely rarely be cleaned, so it'll never really sparkle. We'd be willing to have a non-ideal cut. But of course, I don't want it looking dead either.

So, how do I proceed from here? I'd like to hit the $1500-$2000 range if possible. But, why are there so many under $1500 and so many over $2000 but almost none within that range? Would the sub $1500 ones be too ugly of a cut? Or are there really visible flaws that make the VS2/SI1 rating skeptical? Or what? What do all those abbreviations and dimensions mean in the pricescope search (or at least which ones should I be wary of)?

I guess, which diamond with these characteristics would you purchase?

Thanks

Look at some well cut SI2 clarities even as some are indeed eyeclean. An expert vendor can advise you as to if a diamond is eyeclean, or matches your personal comfort level. You need to let them know what your expectations are of an eyeclean diamond, for example, one which is eyeclean at close scrutiny.

A top tier lab graded I colour ( GIA or AGS) can be a good choice for a colour grade, especially as these appeal to you both in person.

Cut is key for a beautiful diamond. Hopefully your GF will want to keep her ring clean to keep it sparkling!

There can be various factors in pricing, the labs which have graded the diamonds can make an impact on price, colour, clarity, cut.....But hopefully we can help you find something to suit your budget.

I would look for an I or J colour, SI1 to SI2 clarity with an excellent non branded cut. I would stick to Pricescope vendors who have the diamonds in house, that way they can look at the diamond for you and tell you if it is suitable, and eyeclean or not. Also the cut analysis has often been done to help you find a well cut diamond. Also we can offer some suggestions for you!

Thanks

Here is the best search to use:

https://www.pricescope.com/sift.aspx

Put in excellent-excellent for cut, and check only GIA and AGS for labs, put in your size, color and clarity ranges, and you''ll get a selection of mostly in-house stones.
