Hello Fine Folks,

My 10 year anniversary is right around the corner and I thought it was about time I upgraded my wife's engagement ring. Specifically I've narrowed my search to two fine AGS Ideal round brilliants. One is a 1.48 ct and the other is a 1.51 ct. While the price difference is only $1,000, I'm obviously leaning towards the higher carat weight but I think in the long run we would probably be more satisfied with the better cut diamond. With that said, I'm hoping the experts in this forum can help take a look at scans from the AGS certs and provide feedback on which diamond you think is better.

Here's the 1.48 ct:

Here's the 1.51 ct:

What other scans should I be asking from the dealer to help me narrow down my decision? Ideal-scope? Sarin?

They're AGS0 stones, they have done the 'checking' for you. They are both gorgeous and you can't really go wrong. I'd go with whatever one is cheaper by the 1000 and put that toward the setting, they will look identical size wise even side by side. The smaller table on the H should add some more fire to the ring. Just looking at ASETs the first stone, the H colour, looks a tad better, but still, both are fantastic.

Hi Shinydonut!

As Stive says, both look great. The first is a hair deeper than I personally prefer, my favourite is the 1.5 ct but both should be excellent, if you could see both in person and compare directly, you might find you lean towards one more than the other.

I like the crown angle and the ASET of the first stone better.

As Lorelei and Stive have said, both are likely to be gorgeous. You could get into details about cut precision and request other images if you think that will help you make a decision. But the color difference may be more worth basing your decision around. Some people can see that difference. If you are one of them, you will get your value out of going for the G. Presuming the G VS2 1.51 is the one with the $1000 bump, if it is in your budget I think the value is there. Can't really read the plot very well in the image, but it appears there may be a feather on the crown. It is most probably not eye-visible, but sometimes in bigger stones from certain angles, with good close vision you might be able to see it with some effort. If you are already pushing your budget , relax and go for the 1.48 H VS1 - you will not be dissappointed.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I've gone ahead with the 1.48 ct stone. One odd thing I noticed though is that another online retailer had posted the exact same diamond at a lower price. My jeweler already has the stone in their possession. I let them know about the identical posting and they brushed it off saying it happens all the time, but obviously made no mention of the lower price. I've already paid for the diamond in full so not sure what sort of recourse I have here if they don't offer to match prices of competitors. What do you folks think? Should I try and push for some sort of price adjustment?

How much difference in price?

It's a $1600 price difference so it is a pretty substantial sum. For instance, that's like the difference between the 1.48 ct and the 1.51 ct that I was choosing between. They're both reputable jewelers so I don't believe one shop to be trying to fool a customer. At the same time I did mention the price difference and it did bother me that they didn't dignify a response to the large price differential.

Yes it is...I would talk to your jeweler about a price adjustment.
