Please help me replace my grandmas cracked emerald!

Hi! I recently received this emerald and diamond necklace that had been my grandmothers. Unfortunately the emerald is cracked. (It was about 7.7m). My local jewelry sent it to their lapidary in Boston to see if they can maybe salvage two tiny matched side stones (2m?). Fingers crossed!

I am going to replace the emerald with a similarly sized natural emerald. I would like it to be at least 7.7m. The budget for the stone is 6K. I plan to either get a marquis like my grandmas or an emerald cut.

I will then have the new emerald set in a ring with the original diamonds and yellow gold (and hopefully maybe salvaged side stones from the cracked stone).

Please help me with tips on buying the new emerald. I have done some reading and listened to enough podcasts to have some understanding of oiling. I know emeralds have lots of inclusions. Any advice? Thank you! I will update this thread as I shop for the stone and design the new ring!

Thanks. I seems like a big budget at first but the more I research I am realizing how truly $$$ pricy the natural emeralds are... need to decide what my priorities are as far as color, clarity, no oil, etc....

Your grandmothers pendant is lovely and I love that you are repurposing the components to make a ring. That was a great idea to turn the cracked marquise in to two side stones and I hope they are able to do it. I’ve never shopped for an emerald, so I can’t offer any solid advice, but I know there are emerald lovers here that will hopefully come along. I think you should be able to find a very beautiful emerald with your budget.

My jeweler has ordered in some new emeralds for me that already have GIA or AGL certificates.
The lapidary is cutting my grandmas broken emerald into two trillions. I also found out I have another gold and diamond band of my grandmas that I can use to build my new ring! So now I have 18 small round diamonds to work with.

The broken emerald is back from the lapidary and is now two tiny matching trillions that I am going to encorporate into the bridge (undercarriage?) of the ring!

I reviewed two more emeralds. One beautiful 1.14ct that is a little darker and listed at 43250 and one STUNNING 1.44ct that is $6250.

Phew, for a minute I thought the darker 1.14ct was $ 43250 , and then I saw the price written on the ziplock bag - the "4" was meant to be a "$" sign!

I prefer the larger 1.44ct for its more vivid colour for certain!

hahaha no! emeralds are expensive but I know a LITTLE better than that. I am a newbie tho haahaha

I may be the odd duck but I prefer the color of the darker stone. I'm aware that the lighter color is favored by most and it is a lovely stone. But that rich green shade made my heart flutter.

Pros of this - money goes to a local business and Ive seen this stone w my own eyes

Cons - may be able to find another stone that is f1 or better online, budget is still $6k

Thanks for returning with an update! Bummer about the F2. How much will that affect the price of the emerald at this point? If it cost drops to maybe cost to the 1.14, would you be more inclined to keeping it then?

Good question. I just sent an email asking if the price will be lowered now that we know its treated!

Update: I decided to move on from this stone due to the f2. I found 3 stones online that are "no evidence of treatment/filler", fantastic color and translucency, and a similar size and budget to this. I sent those links to the jeweler and asked them if they can source something similar. They had previously tried to tell me that anything better than f1 would be more than $6k. I would like to spend my money w this local business but if they can't find my stone I know I can! Thanks for all your advice!

Still shopping... Currently considering this Zambian, no treatment. Cut looks good to me, color is beautiful. Glow is maybe more....zoned? Very open to input .

Thoughts on this 1.24 Columbian emerald?

New stone to consider. Yes I finally gave up on finding my emerald locally and am now looking at buying one more directly. This is a 1.24 Columbian, Just under 6k. Local cert (RG GEM LAB) "Minor clarity enhancement" . 7.20 by 5.03 by 4.25.
