I''ve learned so much from reading these wonderful forums and my boyfriend and I finally feel ready to buy a GOG AV cushion and get engaged, but I would love some help before we pull the trigger.

A bit of background, sorry for the length: After a preliminary trip to Tiffany''s and watching a ton of GOG videos, we reserved this 2.04 H SI1 August Vintage cushion and went to see it last Saturday:

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/6905/

It was our first time seeing loose stones and Matt was incredibly patient and sweet. I immediately liked everything about the stone (incredible fire, eyeclean to me through loupe) but it looked warmer than I''d expected. Before making the trip, I felt confident that an "H" would be fine (based mostly on online photos, especially gorgeous Single Stone pieces) but in person, I wished it were whiter.

In retrospect, i think my eye has been "trained" on higher colors—my best friend has a 1.5 D radiant and i used to work at a bridal salon where you quickly learned to differentiate a dozen shades of white. My hands also have a strong yellow/olive tinge and white metals and fabrics are more flattering, so maybe that''s part of it.

Knowing their recent online AV inventory has had a gap in the $12K to $22K range, I asked Jonathan how long it would take to source our perfect stone (1.7 to 1.8, E or F, VS2 or eyeclean SI1, square ratio) and he explained that it''s very unpredictable, could be a month, could be eight months. (For reference, our budget is $17K max bankwire for the stone.) He walked us through GOG''s upgrade and trade-in policies, which seem exceptional, and we left with the idea that we would buy this stone, place it in a temp setting and sort of cross our fingers that the warmth would grow on me or be less visible in the real world, while we wait for the perfect one.

We both had some doubts about the idea of a "placeholder" stone but we want to get engaged in the next month and are committed to working with GOG and getting an AV.

On Tuesday, a new AV (1.63 G VS2) popped up on the site that looked significantly whiter (to me) in the photos, but sacrificed a bunch of size: http://goodoldgold.com/diamond/6703

Thinking that color might ultimately more important than size, we switched our hold to this stone and will be seeing it Saturday, and hopefully be able to compare it to the 2.04H unless someone snaps it up. At this point, i would love your help in making the most of this next appointment. Are there other differences I should note beyond size and color?

The 1.63 has a smaller table % and bigger depth % than the 2.04. What does this mean for the look of the stone, if anything? (I like the look of a flat, spread-out pillowy stone with that clear Maltese cross.)

Should I care about the differences in the girdle? (The 2.04 has a "thin to very thick" girdle while the 1.63 has a "medium to thick" girdle.)

There is a difference in clarity, but since the SI1 looked eyeclean to me, does it matter? Are the "natural indents" I think are noted on the GIA something to worry about?

I''ve read that cushions show more color and that bigger stones show more color. I tried on a 1.93 G asscher and it looked visibly whiter on my hand than the 2.04 H cushion, and about the same as a 2.06 F. Is this an optical illusion? Something about the facets or maybe just me?

Is there anything else you guys think I should keep in mind or any experiences with wearing an engagement ring that you might swap out within a year?

Truly grateful for all your advice and help,
Kat

I just wanted to say good luck in your next visit. You have to remember that it is very difficult to find a diamond that meets all your specs - sometimes you have to let it slide a bit. I spent a year looking for the perfect cushion and I sort of found it - it had everyting I wanted except it had a culet which I didn''t want. I now own a August Vintage that is similar to what you were looking for 1.7 ct, E, VS1, 1.0 ratio. Like you, I passed on the first one and the second one was it.

Girdle - I wouldn''t worry about it. The closer the range it is to middle - the better - so this new diamond I would say has a more desirable range. The carat size reduction and the depth will result in a significant size reduction. You have to see if you are willing to go that much lower in size. For me, I would be willing to drop in size for higher color but many on PS like the warmer colors. Go prepared with an over mind!

Bottom line - if you don''t like the stone, it is ok to say no and walk away but be prepared to wait. The truth is .. you could be waiting a month or years! If I hadn''t purchased my stone ... I would still be waiting after 5 months.

Thank you so much for your advice, CharmyPoo. Your cushion sounds absolutely beautiful! :-)

I will try to go with an open mind since both are great stones. It''s good to know that the other specs aren''t that important in this case and that I can pretty much focus on color / size balance.

Take care,
Kat

Hi Katushka,

I wanted to chime in since I was in a very similar situation for the past few months; except I was looking for GOG AV OECs. My timeline is set after waiting 7-8 months and I''m not comfortable with the idea of upgrading.

I actually placed & removed a deposit on an AV OEC since it was almost exactly what I wanted. I eventually realized that there wasn''t a single characteristic that truly bothered me (such as the color of the 2c that seems important to you). While I wish there were more AV stones available for me to choose from; that diamond is the most ideal stone for my timeline. Luckily (thank you Fate), the stone, which someone else had held, became available again and I purchased it...again.

I hope that this new stone feels right to you. Keep in mind what kind of setting you want can affect how big the stone will look and possibly the appearance of the color too. Considering GOGs store policies and satisfaction policies, you have quite a bit of time to take any stone back if "mind clean" issues arise again.

good luck & congrats!

Match,
Thanks for sharing your experience—it''s good to know that other people have been in similar situations and feel the AV line is worth waiting for. I really don''t know how comfortable we are upgrading within a year either...it seemed pragmatic at the time, but not ideal or romantic.

Late last night I saw that the 2 ct H has been bought or put on reserve by someone else. I''m definitely second-guessing my decision to switch the hold but my color-sensitivity threw me for a loop. I''d seen so many stunning PSers'' H,I,J (and beyond) rings that i really barely considered color before shopping!

Despite its depth/carat size, I''m hoping this new stone will be the one, largely so I don''t drive my boyfriend (and GOG) too crazy.

Take care and congrats to you too :-)

If you had hesitation about the color, then I think you should really wait and get what you want. Earlier in 2009 I bought a K color RB despite my hesitations about the color, because it was the size I wanted and was in my minimal budget. But the color bothered me more and more with time and so I recently went up to a G color and I am very happy with the decision. I think color is a very emotional thing, not at all logical, and when you look at your diamond you should feel a little sigh of happiness, not a tinge on annoyance at the color or some other aspect of its properties.

That said, I am a size Wh*re like many PSers, and if the only way to get up to 2cts is to get a lower color than your heart desires, maybe it is a worthy compromise? The G you will look at is about the same size as my 1.2ct RB -- ~6.8mm. The 2ct (or another one) is close to half a mm larger in both dimensions. That is a noticable size difference. Even to me I would be tempted to go lower in color to get that much of a size jump.

In all, I see nothing wrong with buying what is available now and seeing how you feel, and then upgrading later when something you really love comes in. Sometimes you need to live with a diamond to really know what you want. Just don''t tell your friends and family, they might not understand and may be silly about it.

Hi Dreamer,

It''s great for me to read about your experience. One of my worries about switching stones is what my friends and family will think, feeling guilty/silly for my indecision, etc. So I appreciate your point about spending time alone with a diamond till I''m sure.

P.S. I looked up your new ring and it''s just beautiful! The color is exactly what I''m hoping for—crossing my fingers that the 1.6 I have on hold will have a similar color and look as big on my hand. :-)

No one knows I upgraded color, and most people don''t know I ever upgraded the size either. No one looks so closely and I figure it is none of their business

Do what you want and don''t worry about other people.

What size is your finger? Mine is a 6.5 approx so if your finger is smaller the one you are considering will look larger. I won''t lie, I would like a bigger diamond and if I could get it, I would, but the price leap over 1.5 carats in insane for a G color and I don''t want to go lower. So there you go!

I hope you love the one you are looking at too!

Hey Katushka! How did your visit go?

Forgot to post but I saw the 2.04 H AVC. Gorgeous stone but over our budget. I also viewed a 1.67 D and while the 2.04 H was beautiful, I preferred the ice white color of the D. I know, I know..most would say that a D is unnecessary but paired with the SI2 (eye-clean) clarity, the price was reasonable and IMO the size difference btwn the 1.67 and 2.04 wasn't as immediately "OMG" obvious as I would have thought. I didn't ask to see the 1.63 G that you reserved but I am sure it as equally as gorgeous as the H. For such a slight (and for most, unnoticeable one grade color difference), I would opt for the larger "within budget" 2.04H.

Being that 1.63 and 2.04 are both still listed, I assume that you have yet to make a decision.

Hi Everyone,

We ended buying a different AV cushion, a 1.57 F SI1 (I don''t know the other specs because they took down the link immediately after we left...will update soon.)

I really liked the G color (quite distinct to me from the larger H) and square proportion of the 1.63 but the F faced up larger and whiter, so we went that direction. I did see an inclusion through the loupe but not with my naked eye, and i think that will be okay with me...we''ll see. I don''t remember the final price but i think it was 4 or 5k below our max budget. GOG is setting the stone in a simple pave-type temp setting and sending it to my boyfriend, who lives in DC. Hopefully he will decide to give it to me soon and I can post pics! (I live in NYC and that''s part of why we wanted a ring asap, to facilitate the move...long story there).

My plan is to enjoy this stone in its temp setting while we go on Jonathan''s waiting list for that elusive 1.8ish F AV. (I wish we could afford the 2.06 F we saw but at 22k it''s too big a jump.) I would use the same temp setting for the new stone and I doubt many people would notice. Of course there''s a good chance I will be happy with the one we bought as my "forever" stone and use the remaining budget on a splurge setting. (My dream settings right now are two McTeigue and McClelland styles, Open Flora and Flora Pave in platinum, and Leon''s Adriana, although I am used to seeing them in photos with 2+ centers.)

The H stone was beautiful and very tempting. You can really see the facet structure on the larger size, but I felt like the color was too visible when I held it next to platinum eternity bands, and it didn''t have enough contrast with my skin tone. Had I gone with it I would have wanted to seek out slightly warmer or antique pave in a setting. I think I might like the look of an I or J in yellow gold...it''s sort of about the blending of the colors for me.

My one regret is that we didn''t investigate the ASET images or other performance aspects of the stone we bought, but there were relatively few to pick from and face-up size and color became all-important. Crossing my fingers that the sparkle impresses me at home—if we go ahead with the upgrade, I will be taking my time, learning and studying harder and getting that stone appraised.

As on our previous trip, the staff at GOG was great, esp. Charlie. I got a peek at the 3+ carat D AV cushion and all I can say is wow!

Thanks to everyone for their help, esp. Charmy, Match and Dreamer—you helped me feel comfortable choosing color over size. My boyfriend is really happy with the decision too. :-) Collee: I cant wait to see your stone and read more about your setting process. The D color must be amazing!

I can''t wait to see your stone, Kat! (Collee, too!) I appreciate you both sharing your experiences. I have had my 1.45 G AVC for 2 weeks and have been deliberating about whether or not to go higher in color. I just see a lot of warmth in this G and I''m not crazy about it.

Sigh. I''d LOVE to see that 3 ct D!!!

That 2 ct F looks really nice...is it eyeclean?

Hi Starshine,

I found the 2.06F SI1 to be eyeclean, but I didn''t look at it through a loupe to orient me since it wasn''t in the running. (It also faced up larger than the 2.04 H and had a culet that looked prettier to me, but neither difference was that big of a deal.) I''m nervous I will see the inclusion in the 1.57 SI1 since I saw it through the loupe...but I couldn''t in the store so fingers crossed.

I was surprised how much I liked the two G-colored stones I saw: a 1.93 asscher and the 1.63 AVC after worrying over the warmth of the H. I could see the increased warmth from the Ds and Fs, but for some reason it didn''t bug me the way the 2.04 H did. I still think I will try to request an F or E for the upgrade stone to be safe, but if a 1.8ish G showed up at the right price I would definitely take the LIRR to look at it in person!

Did you set your stone already?

GREAT NEWS! CONGRATS!!!

I look forward to see pics.

Do you want me to post the link to your stone?

That would be great Collee! I would love to know all the specs. Thanks!

Congrats on your purchase. I am very happy for you.

In terms of the webpage, GOG doesn''t take it down so as long as you have the link - you can still access it. You just won''t be able to find it on the search engine.

I remember seeing your stone before but I do wish I can see it again!

Thank you Collee!

We picked this one mostly on color and faceup size, not with a ton of examination, so I''d love to know any thoughts on its depth/table/ASET from all you cushion experts!

I compared the stats to your 1:1 and they are very different but I don''t know enough to interpret...

The ASET on mine definitely looks faded in comparison. Does that indicate leakage?

Does more depth mean more sparkle or is it all about proportions?

Feel free to be honest. Mine will be in a temp setting and I''d like to know as much as possible within the return period!

Thanks again :-)

It looks great! I actually think that there would not be a noticable difference going up another .2ct. If you plan to upgrade, going over 2ct is the only leap that would buy you a lot of extra size.

I notice "warmth" in my G compared to a D, but I like it. It is not the same type of warmth that is in a J or K color diamond, at least in my opinion.

This is my first topic on PS and I''m wondering if there''s a way to "call" cushion experts (maybe ChunkyCushionLover, who helped Collee) to look at the ASET/ DiamX on the stone I purchased or comment on the depth/table, all of which I find confusing. Should I start a new topic, maybe wait till I have photos?

this is the link again: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/6285

also, here is the 1.63 I had on hold. http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/6703/ I''d be curious to know which of these stones you would choose and why, disregarding price.

Dreamer—I think you might be right about the upgrade to the 1.8 not being a huge jump. It''s hard for me to know since I only looked at stones in the 1.5 range and then in the 2 carat range with nothing in between!

Sidenote: This is one of the settings I'm most interested in, the Open Flora

What would you guys guess the size of that stone is and its ratio? Any thoughts on approximating this look with an AVC?

Thanks so much again!

That setting is amazing! It would look great with your cushion.

You can start another thead to ask advice about the specs on this cushion.

Beautiful setting! I agree with DD about starting a new thread to ask opinions about your stone. Rest assured though, it looks like a real winner.

We are having the stone appraised tomorrow so I will let you know how it goes. Wish us luck!!!

I think your stone looks great! And the setting you''re planning on is gorgeous!

I have not set my stone yet...I plan to have a custom setting done by Brian Gavin...maybe something inspired by the Tacori 2510.

Here is a link to my new topic about the stone''s specs. https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/which-of-these-av-cushions-would-you-pick.134923/

I''m so glad you like the setting...that entire process is still a long way off! :-)

Love that setting - do you have a photo of the side view?

Sure thing. How do you think it would look with a G color? And with a square AVC?

Gorgeous setting - I can''t wait to see the completed ring. I think it will look beautiful in which ever stone you decide on.
