Hi all,

I just purchased my E-ring. Platinum raised micropave setting with .85ct stone, D, VS1, GIA Excellent cut, Ex sym, Very good polish.

This ring came from a pricescope vendor and my experience has so far, been very good.

However, I have several issues.

One: The stone is now loose and turns in the the prongs. Ring has NOT been dropped and has only been handled by myself. It seems that it loosened after I held it and the ring became warm.

Two: There is a mark on a section of the setting that is visible to the naked eye, as though it has some porosity to the casting

Three: It appears there are striations from where the ring was sized or from where it was clamped or something.

I intend to speak with the vendor tomorrow and hope that they rectify the situation. If not, I suppose I''ll try to start over.

My basic question is, should I see any "sizing" marks, or striations on a platinum setting? I feel that I should see NO mars/markings on the final, finished product.

Am I expecting too much?

I'm so sorry to hear this. All I can tell you is that the quality of settings varies widely. Does the setting have a brand name?

It''s not a "brand" name, but the gentleman that made it seems to be rather well liked and always has stones listed through the Pricescope forums.

It is NOT Whiteflash, or GoodOldGold (great folks btw).

The setting has a chance, as it appears it was the person that set it that basically marred it. Its like it wasn''t finished polished post-sizing/setting.

Talk to the Vendor on Monday. I''m sure he''ll do everything he can to make things right. You shouldn''t see any marks from sizing, may just need to be polished. The stone shouldn''t be loose, so you''ll need to have the prongs tightened asap. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

definitely talk to the vendor. if they are mentioned here often I''m sure they will do what it takes to make you happy. there shouldn''t be any sizing or tool marks on your ring.

Tool marks from when it was sized is usually just a matter of finishing details. They didn’t quite complete the job and the solution involves completing the work that they should have done in the first place. It’s annoying to be sure but it does not result in a ring that is inferior or is otherwise ‘repaired’. By all means, talk to them on Monday about it.

The loose stone can be for a variety of reasons, some serious others not. As with the above, talk to the seller. This may be a simple matter of rushing at the end and not completing the job. Consider getting it appraised by an appraiser experienced with metalwork when it’s complete. Some problems are pretty subtle and can cause you difficulty down the road while others are very easy. The loose stone is a symptom of something else and it’s good to figure out what it is. The remedy isn’t the same for all possible problems.

Like the above, mysterious markings may be as simple as a stain on the metal or it may be a symptom of something more serious. Speak with the vendor about it. In most cases this isn’t severe but they should be able to inspect the piece and explain them to you.

Wanted to let everyone know that the vendor has been workable in this matter. I should have the ring back Monday. I will update then.
