Platinum or White Gold? Which do YOU like better?

I vote platinum because of its durability and also its meaning (timeless and elegance). However, I live in Europe and I must say that 99% of the people here wear WG E-rings. Platinum is only confined to very high end jewelry (Cartier big solitaires, HW etc.). People are usually very happy with WG even if it requires a little more maintenance than platinum...So bottom line is personal taste and budget.

I prefer platinum for a few reasons. I have a nickel allergy, and WG is a pretty mixed bag. Also, I''m like a walking battery...it only takes a few hours for me to start unplating plated metals.

white gold fan here.

Plus, I still have the diamond to buy! I figured $2800 for a setitng was enough.

I vote white gold. I think for any intricate metal work, white gold''s shine is much prettier. Also, I am fair complected. The warmth of the platinum isn''t a good combination with my skin tones. (if your GF doesn''t wear yellow gold, it may be for this reason, too.) The whiteness of the white gold is much better for me. I also prefer white gold due to it''s price. If I intend on having another setting at some point, I wouldn''t want to spend 3x the money to get the platinum that I may not keep. The cases which I would prefer platinum would be for a very large stone for extra security, slim chance of having it reset, and the fact that the stone would have enough finger coverage so the warmth of the platinum wouldn''t be an issue.

Good Luck!!

I second what SomethingShiny mentioned. The whiteness of the WG compliments my skin tone much better than platinum. In addition, if, you happen to be someone who''s body chemistry affects the color, you can always have the ring replated when you take it in for cleaning/inspections, etc. It''s not a difficult or expensive process. I vote for WG.

both metals are fine. WG is quite a bit cheaper than platinum and this makes up for the expense of rhodium plating. However, some people like me think that taking in the setting all the time is a pain in the butt. I do like the color of newly finished WG better than platinum though. Platinum is more of a grey color. I love the weight and the feel of platinum. If price weren''t an issue platinum would always win for me, but with cheaper projects or temporary settings WG wins.

I like platinum better for jewelry that will be worn daily. It is the best quality, and I like quality if I am going to be exposed to it constantly. (Allergies and plating issues come to mind.) So my engagement ring, my favorite necklace that I wear virtually every day, and my diamond studs are platinum.

I have some rings, necklaces, and bracelets in white gold that I wear on occasion. They look fine, and I saved some $$$.

The best of both worlds is 14 k yellow gold. But that is a different look that is out of style just now.

I prefer the heftier weight of platinum, and personally really like the dark gray patina it develops over time. I also like the idea of my ring lasting forever - platinum won''t wear down like gold (of course this is over a lifetime of wear). I love the symbolism of it (metal that lasts forever, like your love, etc.) and the idea that one day my daughter will inherit my ring and it will endure for generations.

Personally, if price is an issue, I''d prefer a simple platinum solitaire over a more intricate or diamond encrusted white gold setting. But that''s just me - I''m really hooked on platinum.

I also agree that palladium may be a great alternative - priced like gold but is durable and white like platinum.

Good luck with your decision!

Personally, I think white gold tends to look like shiny sterling silver. I prefer platinum, baby!

Another vote for platinum. I like the security of knowing that I can repolish it every week (if I wanted to) and I would never lose metal. It makes it seem almost indestructible.

Just kidding.

One other thing - you said that your GF wants white gold. Did this come up in specific conversation about WG vs platinum? I would consider the possibility that she was really trying to tell you that she likes white metals in general, not necessarily that she prefers WF over platinum. Of course I wasn''t there, so maybe not!

I''m with monarch, platinum for ering and wedding band and WG for other items of jewelry.

Which do I like better??? Well, I don''t know. First I had a yellow gold ering. It was pretty, just dated. I updated it with platinum. It was scratched and dinged and needed polishing frequently. Decided I wanted white gold to avoid the patina and scratches. I have now had white gold for 2 years. It needs to be replated yearly. I have decided that I like the patina of platinum and will probably go with platinum for my next ring. Cost was not a factor with either of the last two metal choices. White fold IS lighter. My platinum set was a very heavy channel setting which may be some of the reason I didn''t like it. It was very heavy. Good luck!

Well just to throw a fly in the ointment my Er and wedding ring is platinum but dipped in rhodium! This is what Garry at Precious metals suggested,
But interestingly or painfully depending on how you look at it I think that I might react with white gold because a white gold pinky ring that garry made for me goes grey very quickly and I have had to get it redipped only after a few months. Now its again looking greysih. My rhodium plated platinum rings don''t see me to be going as grey but that may be due to the fact the sparkle of the stones diminish the grey. I probably need to speak with garry about this one day I guess but it is curious.

I prefer white gold.

I vote for plat if the budget allows particularly for an e-ring and w-band but for other pieces I like WG.
In my case at WF the diff b/w the setting I wanted in plat vs. wg was a dollar amount of around $250 and I figure for that price diff it wasn''t much and I should go for it especially since plat is pretty pricey on the market I just grabbed it and I"m super happy with it feesl great on.
Good luck!

I went with Platinum for my new set and love it...

I don't like the fact that my hubby's gold wedding band has to be completely redone after 15 yrs - it has thinned so much and wore down (it started off pretty thick and is now sooo thin that it bends easily).

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, that it was more about colour than metal...unless she doesn''t want him to spend too much money and considers platinum to be a frivilous extra?

I am in the minority here but I prefer White Gold. My first ER was platinum and got SOOOOO ugly..scratches, dull, ect. My WG wedding band never yellowed and I have been married over 11 yrs. My NEW EG is WG and been 2 yrs since I got it and still looks like it did the day WF sent it to me..so WG for me!!!

I have to say, the patina of platinum could def become a problem. You may or may not end up getting it repolished as frequently or more frequently than you would have WG replated.

However, Rhodium is very white. I am personally more of a fan of the slightly darker gray of the platinum as it contrast very well with the brilliant white light return of the diamond. In the same way I believe that palladium actually has the most beautiful contrast as the metal is very subtly darker, not so much that anybody will actually tell a difference between it and platinum when looking at it, but just enough that when you look at the ring and the diamond is shining up brilliant and white it adds that little extra emphasis and contrast between the diamond and the ring, which to my eyes makes the diamond just a tad more beautiful, and a good bit more beautiful than in WG.

So, I say, talk to local jewelers and see if they can work with Palladium, if they can I say get that as long as your fiance is not real big on name recognition. otherwise go with platinum if cost is not an issue, unless you really hate patina or don't want to deal with repolishings, then get WG.
