Of course, I don''t have my jubilee yet..but I"m already thinking about a setting. I love the look of amazing delicate double claw prongs...but are they safe? They just look like they can break or bend b/c they are so thin? Any comments?
If they're in platinum, I think you have little to worry about.
Platinum is a cool metal. It "gives", rather than "breaks". If you catch a prong, it will usually give a little, instead of shearing off.
Just have the setting checked regularly (once a year minimum), and a good jeweler will tell you years ahead of time if you're getting close to needed repairs/reprongs or a new setting.
I love the look of those prongs as well. Veryyyyyyyyyyyyyy classy. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a setting like that for my wife.
MMM, I've set my ring with thin platinum double claw prongs ala LM style. It is expected to be ready today to ship to me. If you have time to kill, I can tell you how it holds up to daily wear and tear once I've worn it a bit.
I've had my Leon Mege ring since 11/26/03 and I can tell you that I think the prongs are extremely safe.
I have to say that this was something I was extremely worried about.
From a distance, it almost looks like your ring is held by nothing at all, you really have to take a very close look at the ring in order to see that prongs are there and that they are claws and split/double.
I have to say, that the prongs have never gotten snagged to anything, unlike all my other solitaire type rings. I never have to remove tiny cloth threads from the prongs.
Also, because the prongs are custom made just for the stone, the diamond is really tight! It's not loose like some of my other rings. Unfortunately, because of this, when and if I decide to change my setting, I won't be able to sell my ring!!!
Anyway, here is a close up of the prong work!
Here is a picture of the same ring from a distance. You can see that the prongs sort of disappear and all you see is the diamond.
By the way, you should still have the prongs checked out every few months by your jeweller. Leon told me that I should bring in my ring to have it checked by him every six months or so and he also told me that if I ever needed to resize the ring, he would do it for me, he didn't want anyone else to do it.
CHRONO- how bout you just give it to me and I'll let YOU know how it's doing? hehehehe...Chrono- that's a jubilee in the pic???
KAYLA- I KNEW that was a Leon. I tried to look at some old posts by you but couldn't find any about the setting...I'm going to PM you!!! That is amazing!!
MMM, no one is touching my preciousssssssss except me.
I've been waiting for this ring for over 3 weeks and I'm dying to finally see it in person. Yes, it's a Jube. I can't wait to read about your shopping experience for your 2+/3ct Jubilee. Until then though, you'll just have to drool over the pictures on PS (or go visit Rhino more often).
Kayla, your ring is just so classy and understated. Very elegant. Do you mind sharing more info on the setting?
2-3 ct jubilee...I WISH!!!! I MAY be able to get up to 2...depending on how long it takes so I have some time to return some bottles and cans and save my lunch money
It's probably going to be under 2...which is awesome!!! Chrono- how long did you wait for yours???
last time i checked GOG had a 1.8 J/SI1 that was VERY reasonably priced on their site, but you probably know this. i assume the J color is too low for you? did you happen to see it while you were out there for the princesses? jonathan swears you would never know it's a J. i'd be curious to hear your take.
about a week ago J told me that he's getting a new shipment of Jubes in 2 weeks--maybe your stone is in there!
I'm COUNTING the days down Reena...but I'm not that lucky
Yeah, F would be my cut off in the princess, but I'm cool with a G in the jubilee .... I am VERY color and clarity sensitive...If I was going with the J, I'd get the 2.5 jubilee
i still love it so i think im going to buy. about to post a thread on that (since i cant seem to do anything on my own these days!)
now i'm in the middle of picking-a-setting hell. tyring to decide on bezel vs. no bezel, and waiting on leon for a quote (he doesn't seem to be in too much of a hurry to give it to me). sigh. this is like a full time job.
It took me a while, but here is a Harry Winston e-ring that I just love!!!!
It looks similar to my ring, but it has a square emerald cut and I think it may give you an idea of how your Jubilee will look in a very similar setting.
Sort of like you, I started shopping for an EC but gave up when I decided it was just too hard to find a really good EC. When I saw the Jubilee, I just knew that it was the right choice for me: a square shape with great optics.
Do you mean my wait for the Jubilee? It's hard to say for sure. I originally wanted a larger and whiter stone and there were none that fit my specs at that time. I was looking for a 0.8ct or 0.9ct G/H VS2. I was prepared to wait for a few weeks if necessary. Then a week later, this 0.7ct J VS2 popped up.
I was hesitant on the colour even though the clarity was spot on. Size was too small too. I really wanted a bigger stone but not too big (small fingers syndrome) since I already have a 0.72 EC. However, what swayed me was the lightscope readings, BScope readings and the spread. Because this little bugger had a lower depth of 64% vs the usual 70% Jubilee depth, it had the look of a 0.8ct Jubilee! It also measured like a 1ct Princess. How can I pass this up? Then Jon assured me that this J did NOT look anything like a J. It was just super white face up. Even knowing all these, I could not make up my mind. I kept it on hold anyway while shopping for alternatives.
Jon had some other prospective Jubilees but they were too deep and so looked smaller. A few others were not so eye clean. Then a gorgeous Hope cushion entered my radar. A 1.01ct J VS1. So tempting. However, it was deeper (70-ish%) and not a whole lot bigger. I could not justify paying almost double for that cushion. Sadly, I had to pass on the sparkler.
So I called Jon to find out when there will be more Jubes in the 0.8 to 0.9 sizes. He told me that his next batch was in the 1ct sizes and up. He could not predict when more will come in. What sealed the deal was the additional assurance from Noobie. I believe he had looked at the 0.7 J vs2 in person. He almost bought it just for the heck of it because it was very white, the spread was very good, the price was competitive and the optics were super. I was concerned that if I passed on this Jubilee, what are the chances I'll get a great performer with such a spread?
I've not regreted my decision. As an additional safety, I have sapphire side stones to make the Jubilee "extra cool white". Well, it's also my excuse to have sapphires in the ring since I like blue.
As to my setting, it took slightly over 3 weeks. Wink has it in his hands and is taking pictures of it for me right now.
Not only do I like the look of the double prongs, I think the double prongs would show off the squarish shape better than single prongs. I've found that normal prongs on squarish or cushion stones make the stones look round.
Yeessss yeesss yessssssssss Kayla and Hest!! That's exactly what I want to do...but with a more square shank...Maybe I should actually get a stone first though
Chrono- there's no way that's a J!!! That's one FINE looking specimen you have there. I can't wait to see it set!!! Maybe the 2.5 J is worth a looksie???
Oh yeah, I remember the threads about you picking the stone. I think you picked the right onw!!! I'm glad it didn't take TOO long. I told John that I'm willing to wait 6 months and then I'm going round. I actually wanted a princess cut...but I was never this excited when I got a princess...even an amazing princess...I'm so excited I can SEE the ring on my clamy paws
On a more serious note, do look at that 2.5 J Jubilee. It doesn't hurt to take a peek and see if it passes your eagle eyes' tests of colour and clarity.
As for my ring, it didn't quite come out as I expected so it's back to the bench for alterations. Until then, no pictures for you picture hounds. Boo hoo! I was hoping to be able to sport it this weekend for hubby's b'day celebration.
That cat is such a cutie. I have a lazy fat Birman that is now a couch/lap potatoe. Picked her up for free nearly 9 years ago as a 6 week kitty at a pet giveaway sponsored by a pet store.
My Jube was supposed to be held by split prongs but it was a single prong instead. The sapphires were supposed to have a v-prong at the end but had the usual stubby prong. I think it was a miscommunication (at least I hope so). Check out the difference.
Seriously- I would not do double prongs on the jub there. B/c that would be THREE prongs around the center stone. I think it looks lovely and the jub looks really square. I would be V prongs on the end of the accent stones but imo, I'd leave the single prongs
It's supposed to look more like this, thus the Jubilee will not see to much metal. All the prongs are supposed to look fine. However Wink just told me that the prongs cannot be finer than what it is now for safety reasons so I hope the double split claw prongs will not be in-your-face huge.
