I am planning on sending these to Jerry for recuts. Would you do the same? The chryso seems to have a window and the sapphire is often showing half/half extinction. Below are the chryso specs.
Carat Weight: 1.82 ct
Dimensions: 7 x 5.5 x 5.5 mm
Colour: Yellowish to lime green
Clarity: Eye clean
Cut: Oval
Origin: Sri Lanka

Below is the link to the original listing.

Sapphire is 1.46 ct, unheated, 6.54 x 5.28 x 4.82. The AIGS report calls it violet blue but to me it is purple. I will attach more pics.

Have you emailed Jerry already about these potential re-cut candidates? If so, what were his comments?

For me, personally, I might consider a re-cut on the chryso (depending on what Jerry's response) - but the purple sapphire is a lovely color with a decent cut and I'd prefer to choose a mount that would close-up that smallish window rather than chance a change in color - as well, a re-cut would render the AIGS cert moot (as the re-cut stone would not match up to the dimensions on the cert) so then (me personally) I'd feel compelled to re-submit for a new cert and that's an additional cost/inconvenience...

I might recut the chyrsoberyl, but the cost of the recut might be more expensive than what you paid for the stone (????). Chrysoberyl prices are all over the place, and you might find a decent one with a great cut on ebay for less.

I wouldn't recut the sapphire.

However, see what Jerry says. He's very good at evaluating the possibilities.

That's a hard color to find a purple sapphire. If you risk loosing face up size, I would not recut it.

For the chryso, I think it's a financial decision. Nice color.

Sorry for the delay. Great advice, thanks! I will send in the chryso and I am not sure what to do with the sapphire. I paid enough for the chrysoberyl to warrant a recut I think, but it wasn't through the roof expensive.

That's probably a good call on the chryso - lovely clean, bright colour! Looking forward to seeing it's makeover pics :))

As to the sapphire... stunning colour!! Perhaps you could also visit some jewellers and try it in some semimounts to see if the little window is likely to close. Or try the silver foil trick (wrapping the pavillion) to see what it would do in a bezel.

If the window bothers you, then that is a reason to do something about it because if you don't, chances are it will not get worn. It's too pretty to fall out of favour in that way. You can always send multiple pictures to Jerry to assess the possibilities.

Do keep us posted on the recut for the chrysoberyl. I also wouldn't touch the sapphire because the cut isn't that bad.

I will! I might have to part with the sapphire though. It is smallish face up and I am not sure of how to set it. I It really doesn't stand out against my skin. I was thinking of a 3 stone rose gold hex bezel with sapphires from Yvonne if I keep it. Thoughts?

Mary, sorry I missed your question but Jerry said a better set of facets could be added near the culet of the sapphire to help with the half/half extinction problem. The chrysoberyl he can fix. I am definitely sending that one. Typing this makes me want to keep and set both

Beautiful stones! Have you worked with the cutter you mentioned before? I'm looking for different cutters.

Cirrus, I have never sent stones to him yet personally but as Loverskites said, he has had a lot of positive reviews.

Well, if it bothers you and if Jerry has already said he can tweak the sapphire then it's too pretty a colour to let go and it would look stunning in that setting.

What would you use for sidestones?

I was thinking sapphires but am open. Paraiba tourmalines would be beautiful too!

Oh! Oh! Oh! Paraiba with that would be stunning! Or even in that colour range.

Re: Planning to send chryso and purple sapphire for recut -

I only sent the chryso. It looks much better - now I see so much light being reflected back. It was 1.82 ct and it is now 1.39ct because he had to remove an inclusion. The face up is the same - 7.1 x 6.3. The depth is now 4.2mm not 4.9.

Awesome, kudos to Jerry for doing such a great job, and keeping the same face up.

Wow - perfect with minimal lost material!! Such a beautiful chrysoberyl!!! :appl: :appl:

I have a 1,38 ct Mahenge from Tan - top color cushion shaped but a large fracture in the pavillion maybe 0,5 mm parallel at the outline.

If I could get a 0,8 + ct after recutting I would be very happy!!!

That looks much better! :appl: :appl: :appl:

Thanks everyone! I am very pleased with how it turned out. Jerry was wonderful to deal with too! Now I have to figure out what to do with it! I think I want it with other coloured stones.

Haahaa, my husband says to set it as a solitaire and to wear it with a green shirt on St. Paddy's day. Must be the Irish blood to be thinking of it already! Honestly we don't do anything for it though.

Smashing work by Jerry. It looks like a completely different stone. :appl:

Wow, the chrysoberyl looks amazing! Makes me want to gather up all my imperfect stones and send them off to Jerry stat!

Does anyone have any cheap setting ideas for this? Now it is St Patrick's day so time to wear it (3 years later!) A plain Stuller setting is still $550 Cdn which is too much.

I bought a used setting on LT. I will post pics when it is done!

Wow. I want a chrysoberyl now, after seeing yours! It’s so beautiful and bright.

It is done! He used an existing band I had. So hard to take pics of! Super sparkly. My glitterball! I am singing the song at lessons so that is a coincidence!
