Hello!

I found this ring in a corporate chain pawn shop where my fiance and I go mostly to buy BluRays. I have purchased a couple lower end fashion rings and my friends bought their e-ring from there. Jewelry buying has always been a good experience from them however they never have much info about the pieces. A couple weeks ago I spotted this lovely ring- It caught my attention right away (even though Im not usually a fan of pears or halos) and after doing some reading on pink diamonds I decided to ask them what they want for it.

They said they would sell it to me for under 1k. The setting is 14k white gold and there are 8 tiny diamonds on each shoulder. She diamond tested it in front of me and said that even though they don't have any paperwork on the ring the company policy is that they don't sell lab made diamonds. The center stone is about .35-.40.

So, I'm looking for advice on if I should buy this ring or not. I have a lovely 1940's e-ring already so it would be more for fashion/investment. Google indicates pink diamonds have quite a bit of value.

I attached a picture and I'll try and put up one of the setting (but those weren't clear). Thanks!

Sorry it's blurry, my phone wouldn't focus.

An idea of its overall hand presence.

It's very pretty! I think worst-case, the pink diamond is treated for the color. I'm not an expert, but a non-treated pink diamond, I would think, would sell for a lot more. Most pawn shops know what they have. They usually sell to dealers first. Some price their items according to Ebay. Only you can decide if you think it's worth 1k. Have you been searching for a ring like this? Will you wear it? The price seems fair, if that is what you want us to tell you.

Hi!

I considered it might be treated- world heat treatment provide such pale color?

I feel like it's a good deal on the setting alone but in a perfect world I would like to make money on it if I decided to sell it. A standard appraisal wouldn't tell me anything would it? Would the diamond need to be unmounted and sent to the GIA?

In my experience, and I purchase estate only (except for e-ring), buying preowned is the best way to go,but it doesn't guarantee that you will recover all of your cash, much less make a profit.

You mention sending it to GIA so I infer that you are hoping that it is a natural and therefore worth thousands? If this is your only motivation, it's only a huge risk if YOU DON't PLAN TO WEAR OR LOVE THIS RING if it comes back as treated. But the price is reasonable and fair for the sake of enjoying. The setting is pretty. You can always search ebay to comp it. Search under sold or completed items--that is a good barometer. I once came across a .70 radiant fancy yellow treated diamond at a pawn shop and they were selling it for $2700. A year later, it was still sitting there, and I know many dealers frequent this shop.

Well, it's a risk without paperwork, but it does not look like a treated pink colored diamond. they are not usually this soft shade of pink. I think I read somewhere here that moisennite (spelling?) and some of the other lab grown diamonds will still give a positive reading for being a diamond with a diamond tester and this is a color you can see with those type of gems. So, maybe some other people who frequent estate sales or pawn shops will chime in on how they determine whether it is a real diamond as I never buy without a GIA report. For what it's worth, I think it is a very pretty ring and certainly well worth the price if it's a pink diamond- probably "light pink", or "very light pink"

Thanks for your opinions!

I don't have the available cash to spend on a ring I didn't feel something for, so while I'm NOT buying with the intent to make money, I can justify the purchase to my honey if he thinks we're getting a rare deal ;)

It was tested with a combo tester so it's not moissonite- also They are selling it as a diamond do if after the appraisal it turns out to be anything else.... well. I'll be getting my money back!

Hi VintageTiars. :wavey:

It's a very pretty ring and looks great on your hand. Buy it if you love it and will wear it. Make the sale contingent upon an independent appraisal. If the independent appraisal is not a condition of the sale and you wind up getting burned, it will be an unpleasant memory and not worth it.

I wanted to revise my earlier statement that I hadn't seen treated diamonds in this color before. I was perusing ebay yesterday and saw a similarly colored pink diamond that had a GIA report that stated it was HPTP (lol- are those the right initials??) heat treated. So, I guess I'm saying-buyer beware- as it appears they do treat and end up with pale pinks!!

Thanks pinkjewel! After all my homework I decided to buy the ring. I got a VERY good deal and know I will enjoy this ring. Even if it's treated I'm getting it for less than the cost of the setting alone. I wish I knew it's origin just for the sake of knowing who made it- I haven't been able to locate a duplicate ring anywhere on the web!

Thanks again!

Congrats on your purchase and enjoy wearing it!!! Are there any markings in the band that might give an indication as to who made it?
