Pictures before shipping?

I'm new to the forum, but have been lurking and using the endless knowledge here for months. So thank you all for that!

My question is, is it UNcommon to request a picture of a custom ring you've had made before the jeweler ships it?

The jeweler I'm using has great reviews and everything has went very well until today. He sent me an E-mail (my preferred communication) this morning saying my ring would be ready next week. Great! I replied asking to see some pictures of the final product (I've only seen 3D CAD pics so far). He never replied, then around 4pm I get an E-mail from FedEx with tracking info for the ring! He shipped it.
I e-mailed him again about the pictures, to which he replied he didn't have time to take pictures before he shipped it. He shipped it today (July 24) and my dead line is Augst 5th.
I e-mailed him back saying I couldn't believe he would ship the ring without getting the customers final approval. He replied saying it's NOT common for customers to want to see a picture of the ring before its shipped. I guess I can understand for a setting from the website, but for a custom setting?

So have any of you had situations like this? Is this really typical practice?

Thanks in advance!

Mmm. Sorry to hear about your experience. Sounds uncommon to me. Most vendors will make glamour shots anyway for their own FB and website and use these to inform the customer. In have personally worked with BE, David Klass, CvB, Leon Mege and Victor Canera. Leon has provided a video before shipping. Victor provides photo's and a video and the others photo's before shipping.

That sounds uncommon, I have noticed here all feature sponsor go extra mile to make customers happy.
I am sure you are protected with return policy and return shipping charges if you want to return it back to the Jeweler.

Thanks for the replies. That's kinda what I thought.
Like I stated, this jeweler has very good reviews here and on other sites so hopefully everything turns out perfect. But its a very uneasy feeling A) not knowing exactly what it looks like and B) if it needs changed, will I get it back by the Aug. 3rd deadline?
I will know on Monday what the outcome will be and update this post then. And hopefully a good review as well.

Your best bet would be to propose with it the way it is then return the ring for any adjustments. That way the timeline isnt an
issue. Will your GF want to take it off her finger to send it back...probably not.

There is always overnight express both ways.
