Oh this is a great thread!

My finger is a size 8 with an unfortunate bit of pudge even with rings that fit properly:roll2:

Please ignore the dog hair in the spinel picture, didn’t notice it before I posted:doh:

I really like that third ring.

Someone remind me tomorrow. I’m in bed and not ambulatory as I await surgery but I have solitaires in sizes 7.25 8.25 and I think 8.75 or 9.

@whitewave Any chance you can post your rings? I agree with @CSpan that it's fabulous to see different size stones on hands of similar size to mine.

I don't, but I do have a few more photos that I've included. It's J, VS1. Set very, very low.

I LOVE that setting! I smack my hands on everything, so a nice low setting is my ideal. GORGEOUS! Is it an antique setting, or newer?

@lala646 It's new but antique inspired. DK made it for me.

I also wanted to add that it's pointless to talk about visual size in terms of carat WEIGHT... you need to give dimensions instead, or in addition to weight. (not all 2.3 ct are the same size, esp if we're talking anything other than MRBs)

Excited to add to this thread - it was so helpful to see these examples from everyone!! My ring size is 7.75.

First up - my 1.3 carat round ACA, I think it was around 7mm.

Next is my 3.3 carat round ACA upgrade that I just received - fun to see the size differences, this measures 9.6mm

I don’t know what I was thinking. They aren’t solitaires. One is a halo, one is my Aqua which is a 7 stone and one is my sapphire 3 stone. So it’s not what you are looking for.

if you still want to see them, let me know.

Such a valid point. A steep/deep will size up small for carat weight. A large table and shallow depth will show a little large for its weight. OEC’s tend to have higher crowns so are also deeper and consequently have a smaller diameter for equal carat weight of an ideal cut MRB.

As you move into other shapes, you face more issues. Weight is a factor of volume which in effect encompasses depth.

Imagine the following:

Square1= 3’ x 3’ = 9sf x 1’ deep = 9cf
Square2= 3’ x 3’ = 9sf x 2’ deep = 18cf
Circle1 = 3’ dia = (1.5’ radius ^2) x pi(3.14) = 7.065sf x 1’ deep = 7.065cf
Circle2 = 3’ dia = (1.5’ radius ^2) x pi(3.14) = 7.065sf x 2’ deep = 14.130cf

Now pretend every cubic foot (cf) weighs 1lb.

Which is largest? It depends what particular dimension you examine, right?

Also consider how a rectangular or oval stone may change it even more. Not only could it provide more SF of coverage but the shape may lengthen the finger and make it more attractive as part of a visual illusion. Place the same stone in the opposite direction and your perception of coverage & attractiveness may change again.

How would a princess set on a diagonal change things for instance? Or how about a thin band vs thick band of two identical sized stones?

I’m not suggesting this is a bad thread. In fact I think it’s great. Just be aware of weight vs size and associated visual effects as well.

I have a 2.38 ct with a 8.6 (I think) mm spread on a 7.5.. I added a 2ct five stone eventually and prefer the way it looks with that because there’s more finger coverage..

Could you show us some close-up shots of your setting? It's got a very romantic look, and I'd love to see more!

Thank you, I love it! The setting is so delicate looking, it frames the diamond so beautifully! Here are some pictures, apologies for the dry hands!
