Perfect ring setting?

When you received your ring was the setting perfect? Did you look at it with a loupe and notice any flaws like tiny scratches?

When I first got me ring, I noticed a couple of tiny scratches on or around the the prongs. I told the jewelers about it but they said since the ring is so small (size 3.5), it''s extremely hard to get all those tiny scratches out. In my opinion, I think they rushed setting my diamond ring since it was during the busy season.

I was staring at my ring earlier today and noticed that one of the prongs doesn''t look nicely rounded out. It looks like there''s some extra metal on the diamond extending from the prong. (kind of hard to explain). It''s nothing you can really notice without a loupe.

Am I going crazy?! Am I the only one who notices these little tiny things!? Sometimes these little things bug me! The tiny scratches aren''t bugging me anymore though. =P

Would you try to get it fixed?

I think I should just stop looking at my ring so closely! Ring settings can''t be perfect, right??

IMO, my ring setting is utterly perfect. The appraiser even agreed. The craftsmanship is so exceptional there is not one flaw that I can pick out with my nit-pickin'' self! It is perfection.

I may ask them to fix it when I get my ring cleaned in a few months. But I''m not sure they could fix it without resetting it. Is it a lot of trouble? They may think I''m too picky. I already complained about the tiny scratches, which they got most (not all!) of them out.

Anyone know how they would fix my prong problem?

They may think you are too picky, but who cares. You paid for a perfect setting. You are going to wear it for a long time. I say have them fix it to your perfection.

I was in a similar situation recently. The prongs on my ring weren't perfectly round (well actually they weren't round at all) so I had a goldsmith work on them a bit. I could still see the problem, so I asked everyone here what they thought.

The general consensus was that if I couldn't see it with my eye, I was being too picky.

I'm not trying to say that you are being too picky because believe me, I understand EXACTLY where you are coming from. I just thought I would let you know what others (including jewelers and goldsmiths here) had to say.

As for my situation, I am still not pleased, so I have decided to bring it to a third party and have them take a look. If they say that all looks well within "normal" then I'm fine. But if they say "Oh my!! How terrible!!" I'm absolutely going to have a new head put on. Period.

Well, I went to a jeweler who has on-staff goldsmiths that I can see anytime. The goldsmith charged me $10 to "refinish" the prongs, as he called it. He rounded them as best as he could and polished the prongs and the band itself.

The goldsmith used a lot of tools, tools that a jeweler just can't pull out of a drawer and use. So I would recommend finding a goldsmith/platinumsmith and have him/her take a look. I really liked the fact that he worked right in front of me, but I was sweating as I watched him do all these CRAZY things to my ring!! As people on here have said before, you really shouldn't watch them work on the ring, it might give you a heartattack!!!

Mine came out perfect. As far as I can tell anyways. Even used a 10x loupe to check. Jeweler checked too. My fiance, also checked it out thoroughly and couldn''t find anything.

Course, they spent an hour finishing my ring. I''d guess about half an hour went into polishing the ring. For a simple solitaire, that seems like a lot to me.

My fiance''s mom bought a ring from another store. The setter he used spent like 15 minutes tops on both setting and polishing. We had to ask him to redo it. If they take their time, I think most jewelers can get it right.

DITTO! I couldn''t have said it better myself. I feel better about being picky after coming to these boards. I realize now that "it''s not just ME". You are going to feel so much better when you have it fixed. I know how if feels when it''s not just perfect (in my eyes) but if I don''t do something about it then it eat''s me alive!

Maybe I just have a bad case of OCD!?!

Hmmm. I can''t tell if you''re too picky b/c I haven''t seen the scratches. But I don''t see why they just can''t polish them out? In any event, how long have you had your e-ring. My guess is that after another 20 years of marriage it will be pretty scratched up too! Don''t sweat the small stuff and enjoy your beautiful ring! No one else can notice it.

moremoremore, I actually noticed the scratches right after I got my diamond reset (after an upgrade). You can''t see the scratches or the flawed prong unless you look at it very closely. I get my ring cleaned every 6 months or so. Maybe next time I''ll see if they can do anything about it.

i''ll say don''t worry about it.its gonna pick up scratches no matter how careful you''re,maybe have it polish every 2 yrs.
