Hi, I have a really hard decision. I am trying to decide between a perfect h&a d IF 1 carat round or a g vs1 h&a 2 carat round. What would you do, and do you think my girl would appreciate a perfect diamond or a bigger good quality diamond? Please help!

I'll choose the latter. I've changed my diamond from D IF to bigger E SI2 :D

What was your reasoning for changing sizes from the perfect diamond?

A philosophical answer: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
It really depends on your girlfriend: in some cultures a smaller but perfect diamond is preferable to a bigger but "imperfect" one, in other cultures the bigger the better.
Before finding Pricescope, I 'd have answered D IF; after Pricescope, G VS1 (assuming they are both h&a), because I found out I cannot see substantial difference between D and G color and between IF and VS1 clarity, but I can see a huge difference between 1 carat and 2 carats.

Other things to consider:
What's her style? Flashy or understated look?
Big or small size girl?
What's the average e-ring carat in her social circle?

the GVS1 is likely to look much more impressive, but less "perfect" on paper. Remember no one goes around carrying the certificate all day.

unless you live in a community where bigger stones are considered trashy and this affects you, or where the colour/clarity of the diamond is asked about routinely, i would go with the 2 ct.

or you could compromise with, say, a 1.5 F VVS2: it should be colourless and very clean

:))

Without question the 2 ct.

+1!!!!!

I would agree with the other folks, get the 2C. I originally was looking at D/IF but settled on E/VS1 and am happy with my decision. I would have gone F in color, but i really liked the other specs on the diamond I found.

2 carat.

In real life you'll never see a D against a G and you and your GF will most likely not be able to detect any color.

An IF vs. a VS1 is also indectable to the naked eye.

If the 1 is not an H&A and the 2 is, the H&A is a gorgeous cut and will be quite the sparkler.

If it will make you feel better to know she has a "perfect" diamond on her finger, or somehow make you feel as though you provided her with a flawless stone, choose the one carat. But in your day-to-day life, the 2 will be indistinguishable, except much larger!

A G VS1 H&A stone just "good" quality????!!!!

My goodness, that is an outstanding stone!!!!

My advice though is to see what size stones her closest friends or sisters wear. Personally, I would not wear a 2 carat stone. I am uncomfortable with my 1.63 at times. So my advice is to find out what size stone she really wants and then get the best one you can in that size.

My answer personally to this would be to get an E or F VS1 in a 1.5 carat, because that is what I'd rather have over either of these two choices. But I'd never choose a 1 ct. D IF because the price is just too inflated considering most people could not look at it and see the difference between an E or F VS1 next to it.

Another vote for the 2 carat....hands down.

As a 1.014 (gotta mention the .014!) D VS1 I am really happy with my stone. I look at it and think it is perfect in every way. Sometimes I think I will upgrade it to a 2 ct I/J or something but I probably wont because it is perfect. I can never look at it and think i see an inclusion, or colour. I won't ever.

So it is up to you. If I got the G VS1 instead of my D VS1(ignoring that your option is IF which to me is overkill  ) I wouldn't consider the G a 'forever' stone and might look to join the upgrading chain gang.

It is a fun problem though!

2 carat...nobody can see that its an IF and a G is a pretty decent color in a well cut stone. EVERYONE will notice the size
difference. It all depends on your GF but for me it would be the 2 carat.

The 2ct without a doubt!

The 2ct, not even a question for me. Nobody will be able to tell a D from a G (especially not side by side) or an IF from a VS1.

2 ct. VS1 is the same as IF to the naked eye.

If you want higher color, maybe look for a E/F VS1/VS2? Somewhere in between 1 and 2 carats?

This is the simplest question I've answered in a while - for me, the 2 carat wins easily

I have a 2ct rectangular radiant G color.I    it. It faces up VERY white . I wanted a BIG stone and a G got me there G seems to be my sweet spoint. I like the slightest bit of color, it gives character to my stone and setting. I am color sesitive but I LOVE my G

Not to sound tacky GO BIG ... :naughty:

Good Luch

Absolute no-brainer.....2 carat all the way.

If you think she's prefer a 2ct, than G VS1 are still fantastic specs, and I'd go for that.

If it were me, I'd probably look for the biggest, well-cut F VS2 you can find within your budget. (colorless, fantastic clarity) Or, as Steal mentioned, the biggest D VS1-VS2 your budget would allow. To the naked eye it should look the same as D IF. D color is special and I don't necessarily agree that it is indistinguishable from a G, even when set. (I own both.) That said, I'm a colorless stone enthusiast and I'm sure most people wouldn't agree with me, at least not on PS.

HI:

Both stones would be a pleasure to receive. But if given a choice--I would, without a doubt, choose the 1 carat D IF. Lucky choice to make!

cheers--Sharon

depends on what your GF values more. End of story.

in all seriousness, everyone will vary between the "lesser" quality but bigger carat..... or perfect stone but smaller carat. It's a personal matter.....(mind you- a G VS1 is a very quality stone as well)

What do her friends/family have? Are they all wearing .5, .75, 1, 1.25 ct stones-- or are they all walking around with 2ct stones? If its the latter I think she would want the 2ct as it's prob seen as the norm. If it's the former, then she might prefer to have a "perfect" 1 ct.

Personally, I would sacrafice some color and clarity for size, but not everyone feels that way. I think your best bet is to feel out her family and friends, if she has an engaged friend maybe ask your gf about that ring.... feel out yuor GF as to what is important to her.

I think one question would be if your girlfriend would really appreciate a "perfect" diamond. I know how rare they are and would love one, but can't say for sure I'd want to give up half the size for it.

2 ct hands down for me as well !

i am chinese and my mother only buys diamonds that are at least F color and VVS2 quality. that idea has just ingrained in her so deeply that she would not even consider anything else. In Hong Kong where i grew up every girl only wanted a perfect flawless round solitaire for their engagement. friends around me had engagement rings that were about 0.5ct - 0.75ct due to this. my upbringing had influenced my decision when i picked out my engagement diamond (my DH lovingly let me do so myself). While size really mattered to me my culture influenced me so that i picked out an 1.72ct F VVS2 stone (when i could have easily gone to a G-H color VS2 clarity for well over 2cts).

i then discovered pricescope and had significantly looked into other factors that would affect a diamond's beauty. i had since become so interested that i had decided to take a few GIA diamond courses to enrich my knowledge to know that the CUT Is the most significant factor to a diamond's overall beauty (brilliance, fire, scintillation). while your 1ct is a D IF stone, the 2ct G VS1 is an H&A, meaning that the CUT is the cream of the crop. this WILL make your G VS1 stand equally white as an F color stone. and an F stone is seriously just as white as a D even under fluorescent light. my stone has since been traded up to a 2.32ct G VS1. equally beautiful, equally brilliant, equally WHITE, equally MIND CLEAN.

the only difference that one can discern even with trained eyes is that IT IS JUST A LOT BIGGER. :appl:

do your GF a huge favor and get her the 2ct

I would go for the 2 ct as well. I am a size girl. No one is ever going to know or ask if the stone is and IF. I am not all that color
sensitive and I would be thrilled with the crispy whiteness of a G

Agree with most pp's. Bigger! ;)

I personally would go for the 1ct diamond because not only are these my favourite size diamonds in terms of the look of them, but actually I think there is something really special about having a really high quality diamond. Me and my OH recently had this dilemma when choosing my engagement ring. Our budget was quite significant and so we had the choice between a smaller, higher quality diamond, or a larger one with poorer colour/clarity etc. I chose the smaller D colour diamond because it's more to my taste and I really like knowing that it is the whitest colour of diamond which has ever been discovered. I love knowing that there aren't many people out there (relatively speaking) wearing rings with diamonds in which are as stunning as mine, and as high quality as mine.

For me, a lot of the time when people say they would choose a bigger size, it's down to what other people will think of it rather than what they personally think of it. Most people when shown a big diamond will marvel at it's size, yet other characteristics of diamonds aren't as well known so people will never ask about them. I personally don't care what anyone thinks about the size of my stone, what matters to me is what I think of it, and what I know about it. Yes, the naked eye can easily spot the difference between a 1ct and 2ct stone, but what matters more to you (and your gf), what others see in your diamond, or what you know about your diamond? I personally prefer the warm glow I get from knowing how special my stone is.

I think you may need to just ask your GF's opinion, sneakily or directly, because this can be a polarizing debate.

My gut reaction is to vote for the 2 ct., but that is after years of being exposed to PS, and having not had the "benefit" of this exposure, I probably would have chosen the 1 ct. or split the difference with a 1.5 ct. F VVS2. Assuming all are ideal cut diamonds.

But, I'm a fan of more petite diamonds; after all of my years here on PS, I still gravitate toward 1.5 ct. rounds because the finger coverage is perfect on my 4.75 fingers. I find a 2 ct. too large on my own finger and sometimes feel self conscious when I wear some of my larger coloured pieces, so the only way to answer this correctly, is to get some input from your intended. Good luck!
