Greetings - Where would be the best place to send a very nice Akoya pearl double strand necklace for restringing. I've heard horror stories about small jewelry stores that do this, and it ends up a mess. This is a good double strand, and I want to make sure it is in the right hands. Many thanks in advance.

i am one who had a bad experience through our main street family jeweller
but they did put it right

i would try word of mouth, people in your town will do it

i litterly had a lady come into work and i complimented her on her necklace, turned out she was the sister of a diffeent jeweller in town and she did it as a hobby in the back of his studio

at least i dont have to worry about shipping and insurence
i live in a smallish provincal city in NZ -litterly the boon docks, but i work in an old money part of town where our customers do wear nice jewellery including lots of pearls, even the high school girls in my town wear pearls

i must add i tried her out first with a cheaper strand to make sure i was happy with her work

To be honest, I prefer to restring my own pearls. I find the process very peaceful, you can get it exactly how you like it, and oftentimes I get to know the piece I’m working with far better than I originally did. Also very good for stretching the hands.

It’s a dying art, pearl knotting.

i wish i could do it but i have hand issues that make it too painful
it would save me a fortune

I'd recommend going with a reputable jeweler that specializes in pearls, not just any jewelry store. If you want peace of mind, check out Mikimoto or similar high-end brands they’re known for their pearl expertise and often offer restringing services. Better safe than sorry!

you know you could do it yourself
its coming up to winter for you guys
a good winter project

buy some cheap Wen ones to practice on,
plenty of the ladies in this forum do it them selves
you cant damage them by repeatably restringing
how cool would it be to make that necklace all your self

if you need inspiration @MakingTheGrade is one of many who does her own -go look at some of her posts

Thank you all for your great insights. I don't really want to tackle this myself, and the clasp is quite complicated with alot of pearls and small diamonds. I see that Pearl Paradise does restringing, and I also found the website for Sue Runyon Designs - does anyone have experience sending pearls to Sue? I might inquire with Mikimoto if they accept necklaces that they didn't sell, any clues as to that?

Have a good weekend everyone!

Mikimoto would be very pricey, but I don't think they even restring non-Mii pearls.

I would advise to proceed with caution.

I took 3 strands of pearls to a local jeweller for restrining, only one was done right which was the near round white South Seas.

For the gem-quality CFWP with a basket clasp that can be worn lariat style, the third-party re-stringer did not have a clue how to re-string it and came back with an added jump ring at one end, when it should have been double-backed with the gimp to secure the end. :roll2: They re-strung it for free after I informed them how to do it. :roll2:

For the baroque Tahitian, when I got it back, it was obvious to me that the re-stringer did not lay out the pearls as he/she cut them off and re-string according to their position and orientation in the original strand. This resulted in pearls pointing in the wrong direction, e.g. the drop-shaped ones pointing downwards rather than upwards, and smaller pearls in between larger ones etc., if you know what I mean.

I would need to have the strand re-strung, and I shall line them up exactly how I want them strung, take photos beforehand to avoid any mishaps.

I can probably re-string the strand myself in my RV, as I can't do that in the house due to having a cat and a dog that have access to all the rooms in the house! :roll2::lol-2:

I second both Pattye and Pearl Paradise if you're based in the US!

Pearl Paradise is a little less pricey (like, a few dollars, maybe tens of dollars - nothing meaningful) but lead time will be longer. Pattye has more thread options and works lightning fast! Pearl Paradise can provide an insured FedEx label - not sure if that's something Pattye can do, check with her first if it matters to you.

Edit: Ditto pearlsngems. Mikimoto will not work on pieces that aren't theirs.

i can sympathise with you DK
at least mine were just cheap boroques from the mall jeweller (note it wasnt the mall jewlelr who got them restrung them but a long established main street family jeweller in town)

mine came back from the 3rd party restringer with no knots -and the girl behind the counter tried to justify this by saying knots it would have made the necklace shorter -lucky her boss could see they were just done wrong and it was rectified

i am glad your necklaces got fixed to how they should have been the first time

and i totally get the cat and dog thing :lol-2:

Same as everyone above! Pattye or Pearl Paradise will both be good options!
