Can someone kindly explain how "Pave" and "Bead Set" are technically different? I did a search on PS, after reading here and got really confused.

I''m interested in a Fishtail / V-Step Pave ring like the pictures below, but I have had several jewelers tell me they are "bead set" (showed them pictures).

Can someone please bridge my gap in translation?

I''m not much of an expert in this area, but I did find this very short thread, which has a post by mrss, who is an expert on this sort of thing. Seems they are indeed different, but no detailed description, which I gather you may be after.

Anywho, I''ll give you the link and a bump, and hopefully you get it all sorted out!

I think pave is the pattern of the melee stones on the ring, usually the effect looks like what you get when you try and pack the maximum number of pennies together, 6 neighbors to a center penny. Bead set is describing how the stone is held down.

iheartbora-fishtail pave is bead set, but the V-step or fishtail is describing the little V or texture that is the *style* of beadset pave. Does that make sense? there are several styles of beadset pave, mushroom pave, single row, fishtail etc. I do think you should probably work with a custom jeweler who understands what you mean though so you don''t end up disappointed.

OMG....thank you so much for the clarification.

So...
Bead Set Pave = one type of pave
Fishtail/V-step = one type of Bead Set Pave

For some reason the jewelers just didn''t use the term "pave", and I was so sure that it''s a pave!

Well, from the sketches, it looks pretty close to what I''m looking for, just that the terminology was bothering me. I''m keeping my fingers crossed!!

I have a dumb question. So what is the difference between bead-set and prong-set?

if you are talking about pave, probably nothing..it's just terminology. some jewelers call the tiny pieces of metal that secure the tiny stones beads, others will call them prongs. there are prong set bands which is something completely different though.

Mrssalvo, thanks for explaining.

But could please explain more on the "prong set bands" you mentioned? Is there such a thing as "bead set bands"??

Prong set band with real physical prongs, using WF as illustrations.

Bead set band are like pave setting, sunken into the band and held down by beads. WF example again.

here''s a picture of vatche rings that show what you are describing...the first two I would describe as regular pave...

Thanks Stone-cold and Mrssalvo for taking time to explain.

So is it correct to say that for shared prong set band, each of two prongs are holding two adjacent stones and in bead set pave, each small diamond is held by 4 beads or prongs?

prong set: a seat is cut into a prong and the diamond set into it
bead set: a seat is cut into the ring/band/halo itself and a bead holds the diamond into the seat.

The difference is where the seat is cut, prong or ring/band/halo.

great article iheartbora.

sillysweetie-bead set pave is usually made with 2 beads/prongs between stones. there are 4 prong versions out there where there are 4 prongs holding each stone. mara has a 4 prong eternity set...here's her rings, see how there are 4 tiny prongs holding in each stone? the tiffany novo is designed this way too..
