Hi all

I am in need of some education and I have read the information on Leon Mege's art of Platinum website on pave, but I am still none the wiser and am working on a custom(ish) setting.

I need to select which pave: U/scoop OR V shape. Please help! I just need more help on what is preferred and why? Is one safer? Does one sparkle more?

Thank you!!!

Bump! I could really use a little help, please let me know anything that may be of help to me. :)

Page Charmy or Frankie. They are the best to advise. Alternately, call and talk to Leon and ask him to explain.

Safest is bright cut (either with or without migrain). V or U would be the same in terms of safety. In terms of sparkle they will be the same too AS LONG AS THEY ARE DONE BY AN EXPERT AT PAVE.

It's not the type of pave that will make or break it-- it's the skill of the person doing it.

Thank you Gypsy!

I am so grateful for your help on this.

I will read up on brightcut pave. :)

Thank you very much on this. In terms of experts on pave, can I go to any of WF, GOG, ERD? Or must it be a hand forging expert eg Victor Canera, Leon Mege?

I would personally prefer ERD for CAD/CAST for pave especially in the 1 carat center stone size. I think theirs get closest to the look of handforged is finer with metal work in the actual pae. If you can afford it Steven or Victor OR ERD's handforged bench (they have two benches, one for CAD/CAST another for handforged) would be my strong preference. I think BGD's bright cut is nice. As for WF... I don't know. I really disliked this recent ring: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-wf-micropave-oval-halo-not-quite-what-i-expected-pics.180463/ but they have done nice work in the past (Chrono's pear spinel stands out-- but was a large stone). I think if you have a large rock it's easier to get a better proportional look with CAD and CAST. If you have a smaller rock (like I do) since handforged can use smaller melee and has much finer metal work, I have a strong preference for it.

Wow Gypsy! You are beyond awesome. Thank you.

I wonder, for ERD at around the 2ct mark, for CAD/CAST can I get a double halo which looks delicate? That's the aim for me.

Will the prongs be fine enough? Should I specify the pave size?

For a double halo... I would have a strong preference for hand forged for two reasons: delicacy of the work and stronger construction for all that pave.

Is this for a round?

As for specifying melee size. You can... but you can also just send in pictures of the proportions you like as well.
I think you can get a nice CAD and CAST double halo, don't get me wrong. And I think ERD could do it and the prongs would be lovely. It's just that in terms of good and better, I think CAD/CAST is good but in this case handforged would be better.

Gypsy you are too awesome. Thank you. Really, thank you.

It is for a round - does this impact the decision?

I heard that ERD are awesome at CAD/CAST, so am glad to understand the difference between the two. I have so many questions that I feel that only you could answer, but feel so embarrassed posting all my ignorance on this board. If only you could be with me to purchase!!

Thanks again.

You are going to be fine.

Mark is SO awesome. Really. Call him and just talk to him and he'll totally help you out. That's how I learned: from the vendors and the posters on this board. And Mark is one of the best. Seriously. If you don't click with him then I suggest calling Steven Kirsch or Victor (budget permitting) they are both lovely gentlemen. I haven't worked with Victor, but he did quote/work with me on a design last year for a ring I ultimately decided to scrap as a project and I was very impressed by him. Plus he has helped out on here with posts and I've learned a lot from him (and from Mike R. but he's booked for the next 18 months).

The round/cushion thing doesn't make a difference, but there ARE double halos that are CAD and CAST readily available for rounds, and that may be MUCH less anxiety inducing for you-- if you get a stock halo instead of a custom one. Actually Gabriel and Co has a double halo I saw the other day and thought was pretty. With rounds there are SO MANY stock settings available that... if you are nervous about custom, you CAN avoid going that route. And for some people that's the right decision. I just wanted to know if that was an option for you.
