I thought it would be fun to compare diamond sizes by posting our original e-rings with our upgrades, if you still have them!

Please give the weight and mm size of each diamond that you post as well as your ring size. It might help others who are trying to decide on a diamond size.

My ring size is 5.5. The top ring is my original diamond at 1 ct and 6.5mm, anniversary ring at 1.58 cts and 7.45mm, and my new AVR diamond at 2.12 cts. and 8.15mm. One thing to note is that the bottom ring is in a ring holder, so it is sitting higher than the diamonds in the two rings above it. (The middle ring is going to GOG to be sold on consignment, so this is my last chance to picture all three! I couldn't get them all straight at the same time, unfortunately!)

very helpful post :wavey:
based off your rings, maybe your next solitaire should have 8 prongs

Great comparison pics. It's amazing what 1.5 mm makes. Now I want 3.5 ct.

The AVC is stunning. Th pic confirms I like these old cuts far more than the mrb.

Beautiful!
Definite progression. Very fun!
(My jewelry timeline is not so orderly, but it might be fun to try a photographic narrative of the keepers for my daughter.)

I only have old pre-PS pictures of my original stones. The first was a .5, the second was .91 and my current is 2.5.

I don't have my upgrade picked just yet, but I just had to say how STUNNING your AVR is . It blows the other two away!

Love being able to see the size progression! Your AVR diamond is so gorgeous!!

Fun topic!

Original e-ring was a 0.98 carat (6.23mm) H SI2 eye clean round in a channel set setting, picked out by DH.

My upgrade was a 1.80 carat (7.83mm) H SI1 in a pave halo. It was a huge amount of finger coverage!

Niel...that was a good one about the prongs!!!

Charmy, Harper, Valmanin, and Von...thanks for your nice comments on the AVR! There is no turning back for me. I truly do love it (and other well cut OEC's!).

Great pics, Athena and Laila!!! This is fun to see the originals and upgrades! Of course, I didn't think about the fact that this might really scare the guys looking for engagement rings!

great pictures!

DS, your new AVR is TDF!!! No comparison...I just love those chunky facets!

I wish I had a more useful finger comparison like the one you did DS but unfortunately I didn't have my original when I got my upgrade and when I had my original I didn't get good pics. Here's the best I can do...
My OEC 4.56 (LVS1) and my original MRB 2.93 (GVS2)
(and for fun I added a fun closeup of the facets :sun: )

Wow, Athena and Laila-those halos make a huge difference! Great pics!

I remember when I first joined PS I saw a very similar slide showing the journey of D&T's ering and I thought that many changes was just nuts. Well 4 years later I'm right there with her  :P

I hope the picture comes out but just in case here is my ring progression with more info.

1- Original Natalie K set with .76RB F SI1 (sorry no info on measurements)
2- Same setting with upgrade 2.08ct RB D SI2 (8.27 x 8.20 x 4.93mm)
3- Reset 2.04ct into VC Emilya Setting
4- Upgrade 5.06ct antique cushion in PLAT Rosebud inspired setting) (5.06ct N/O VS1 10.7 x11.1mm)
5- 5.06ct antique cushion reset into VC Emilya setting

I've been married since forever so I do not have pictures of the original ring. Suffice to say that it was a minuscule diamond chip and probably a size 4. It has grown through 3 rounds, followed by 3 emerald cuts. It is currently being set in a new setting so no pictures as yet. My finger size has grown to 4.5 and the stone measures 7 x 5 mm.

I've been married a long time as well [33 years this Aug]. My original engagement ring was a round 4.49 x 4.47 x 2.50mm and weighed .30ct. The ring is a size 4.5. At our 15 year anniversary we upgraded to a 1.61ct princess, 6.00 x 5.88 x 4.80. It was very deep and looked more like a 1.25ct. My last upgrade was at 27 years and we went with something totally different, a 2.52ct FLY radiant. It is 8.43 x 7.40 x 4.36mm and is a size 4.75 with a sizing bridge. I don't have the princess any longer but the last shot shows where we started and where we've come to. Quite a change I'd say.

Very scary, isn't it?!!! I was thinking the EXACT same thing!!!!! Timely for me because I no longer think a 2 ct is too big for me!

More gorgeous rings Missy, Sarah, and Michelle!!!   :appl:

Waiting for yours Charmy!!!!

(Oh, and I have also been married for 30+ years, so I lived with my 1 ct for a very long time!)

I've been through a lot of changes in the last five years, since I found pricescope!

I have some good comparison pictures I think.

On the left is my first diamond engagement ring: .80ct J VS2 and 6.1mm.
Middle is my 1.16ct K Si1 upgrade, which was 6.8mm.
Then my 1.67ct J VS1 upgrade, which was 7.65mm

ddsizecompare_0.jpg

Here is a bigger photo of the 1.16ct and the 1.67ct.

116vs167.jpg

Here is the 1.67ct next to a three stone with a 7mm center and 5mm sides, next to the 1.17ct. I did not have this three stone long but its a good comparison.

2solitaire3stonecompare.jpg

And finally my precious. 1.89ct K Si1, 8mm in a bezel mount that gives the ring an 8.7mm hand presence. I still love everything about this ring and have no urge or desire to change it!

Surprisingly, I actually don't think I have many changes that count.

1 - Maytal ring with 1.52 ct cushion (never worn)
2 - Maytal ring with 1.52 ct cushion and a halo (same cushion but looks a lot bigger with the halo - barely worn)
3 - Leon ring with 1.72 ct cushion (pretty much the same size)

So my pics are more about style changing than actual size increase. Do you remember years ago I said 1.7 ct is my max and it's a bit big already? Heck, with my new stone .. I am thinking it's a bit small even though it's more than 0.5 ct increase. I don't even have it on my finger yet. I think all these PS pics is making me think finger coverage equals covering your whole finger! Hehehe...

2 ct or 8 mm is the sweet spot for me but who knows since now I'm quite used to a whole finger coverage. When I first joined PS, 1 ct was huge to me. I guess that's what sidestones are for.

Yes, and I spent 5 years thinking 1.6 was too big!!!! I really don't know where that person went!

But I though you'd still include the new diamond in that list! Tell us the weight and mm of that beauty...and we need pics of these 4!

Dreamer....I feel like I was following you! I love your precious!!!

Yes! The faceting on our diamonds are fairly different, but the size and style are similar!

The mount really makes it for me. When worn my diamond looks the same as a 2.5ct at 8.7mm. That little extra size boost made all the difference in the world, along with the lovely profile of course. The right mount made the ring for me. I know at this point that I cannot afford a diamond over 2ct, so this is a good style for me! I don't like regular bezels though, or diamond halos, and the dlicacy of this bezel is ideal: only .3mm! So perfect. I hope you will find a mount that equally gets you aflutter!

Demelza and I have compared, if anyone is interested. 2.5ct RB on top at 8.8mm an my 1.89ct in a bezel on the bottom at 8.7mm including the bezel.

mrboeccomparison__2_.jpg

The thing is now if I ever wayted a "bigger" look I would need at least a 9.5mm diamond  That is sufficiently out of reach to keep me loving my ring :rodent:

#1 (.5 ct RB with one tension set diamond on each side)

I think my 8.2mm with 1.5mm VC halo was pretty near perfection for me. I loved the size just not the cut of the MRB.

Aww, thank you so much Nyc2chigal!

1. Wore my .73ct princess solitaire for 15 years.
2. Upgraded to a 1.91ct princess solitaire for our 15th anniversary. That being said, I had a change of heart and sold the stone 6 months later.
3. Had my original .73ct reset for a RHR.
4. My "Lady J" found me as I was originally looking for an OEC. Lady J is 2.61ct, from JbEG, assumed to be an early modern brilliant.

For reference I am a size 8.
