This is from union diamonds. The carat is .90, princess cut, vs1, f color 78.10 for depth, 77 for table, ext thin to thick girdle. Polish good and symmetry fair. I am new to all this but have been researching. Any info. would help on this particular diamond. Price is about $3000. I really would like the diamond to shine, but does having a rating of good for polish have anything to do with it?

To find a better cut princess diamond, try keeping the table and depth percentages around 70-72%, or less. Don't go to shallow on depth or the diamond may take on a "washed out" look.

Check out the cut charts for princess cuts at www.gemappraisers.com.

Also, you might want to check out the inventory at

www.whiteflash.com Expert Selection

www.dirtcheapdiamonds.com Signature Selection

www.goodoldgold.com, and

www.niceice.com

All 4 Vendors maintain a physical inventory of princess cuts that have been professionally evaluated and hand selected for performance.

I don't know much about princess stones, but this one rates a 2B for both the table and the depth (both too large) according to the aga charts at www.gemappraisers.com unde rthe DIY cut evaluator. THe sprakle of the stone will be mostly dependent on the cut proportions. The polish has to do with the "finishing" of the stone. Diamonds are about light reflection, so cut id king. Fancy shapes are tougher to evaluate by the numbers, but there are several princess foc used people here, so maybe they can chime in.

Do some searches on the pricescope search engine to see alternatives and see how this stone compares price-wise. Also, as you get serious about a stone, do some searches on the vendor to see what others have to say about their experiences.

Good luck!

That's as big as a 0.7 cts, so 3k would be definitely way too much for what the stone looks. If the size is satisfactory, why not get a 0.7-0.75 carat one ?

The "shine of diamonds does not depend on polish but on proportions. The stone is discounted for it's proportions (since it looks 0.7 - it is price like that). However, one can only wander what the respective combination of numbers can do to the stone's brilliance. I'd rather not wander and go for a stone which has received some test of brilliance - otherwise there is no magic formula to tell whether this or that table and depth percentage will provide the "shine" (routinely called "light return" around here) you seem to be looking for.
