Opinions on this Octavia Asscher

Congrates!!!! :appl:

SQUEE!I love it :)

How exciting!!!!

I would probably have them ship it to me just because I wouldn't have the patience to wait! And I do like to see things before investing all the money to set the stone.

I so hope your dream setting works out - if so you may inspire many similar rings in the future!

Great news! I was so happy to read your update today!

I wouldn't trust GOG's bench for this project. They do acceptable work on normal projects, but they would be one of the last vendors I would contract for the baguette halo for you. I'm glad Mark's quote was reasonable!!! Fingers crossed for you!

You are right, Gypsy :) He does trust me, it's just that I was afraid he might value the opinion of a "professional" more when it comes to a huge purchase like this. I can understand why he might second guess because most people hear ALL THE TIME "always buy a diamond in a store, NEVER buy a diamond online, it's a scam," and then to have that idea reinforced by someone in the diamond biz might make him think that maybe I'm the one that's been led astray, but....

it turns out he trusts me. :)

HE BOUGHT IT!!! He bought it this afternoon while I was still drooling over the video. :appl:

We are leaving town for Christmas so he has asked GOG not to ship us the stone until after the holidays. That might change depending on who we get to set it. I've already gotten one very reasonable quote from ERD, still waiting on responses from BGD and GLJW, and Jon said GOG might be able to do something for me too. So we'll see which one of those ends up being the best option. BF told me that his buddy recommended he go to Alvin Goldfarb in Bellevue, but I told him that for a project like this, it was really important that we go with a name I trust, and he respected that and said we'll go with one of the vendors I've contacted.

Does anyone know how much it costs to ship a stone? I'm just wondering if we should have it shipped here and then ship it out again to be set, or if we should have GOG ship it straight to whoever's doing the setting (if we end up having GLJW do the setting, we can just drive over though). I am already confident the diamond is beautiful, so I do not think it's necessary that I have it in person before it's set (if shipping costs are going to be high then I'd rather skip having it sent to the house), unless you guys think it's a better idea to have the diamond physically in my hand first. Normally I'd prefer to inspect it personally, but I feel that Jonathan is a source I can trust. If it helps to know, Jonathan said he'll be taking some macro shots of the diamond and sending them to me tomorrow.

Thoughts?

So excited! Hooray!
When GOG sent me a stone, they charged $30 dollars one way.

Yay! I'm so glad you are supportive of me doing this setting. To be honest, I felt a little guilty picking up a setting that you wanted to do, but I figured it would be okay because that was several years ago, and I suppose lots of people have the same setting anyway. I am glad you don't seem to mind. :) It's the perfect ring, and I'm going to have to be the one who wears it forever, so it has to be just right! :wink2:

I've heard back from BGD too, now, and their estimate was a lot higher-- $5500. ERD's was $3500 max. Any idea why the discrepancy is so huge? ERD said that their estimate accounted for the entire project, including custom cutting the baguettes. Do you think there would be a difference in quality? As for GOG, Jonathan said he would talk to his people and see what they could come up with, but maybe I can ask him how much it would be just for him to source the stones? It might be cheaper for me to give all of the diamonds to a designer and have them do just the setting instead of the whole thing.

I'm talking with the designer from GLJW right now and she's calculating an estimate for me. If not too extravagant, they'd be my preference because they do good work and they're right here in Seattle.

Oh! That's not bad at all. I was expecting to hear more. If that's the case, then I have no problem shipping it back and forth to a designer if need be.

No, the designer HAS to source the baguettes! They have will probably design the setting and then have the diamonds cut specially. It is always best to have the ring maker source all the melee for the ring.

Congrats, though!!! I think you will adore this stone! Have GOG send it to the setter. In the case of ERD, they may hand deliver. But one shipping will be free for you. It is only if you have them ship it more than once that you'd have to pay.

I'll be interested to see how ERD does with this setting at this price point. If they do it well, they may see even more requests for settings like this.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAY! I was so worried for you reading your earlier posts about Misguided Jewelry Friend Guy, but yay! I'm living vicariously through you with both the Octavia AND that setting, so I hope for many, many pictures! I watched the video when it popped up on my fb feed earlier and knew it was your stone - it is soooo stunning, omg. Just an absolute fireball.

ERD seems to have a number of settings with custom-cut baguettes (especially their Royal T line or whatever it's called), so I wonder if they have a better relationship with a, umm, baguette-cutter. (??????? It's 2 am and I can't sleep, so I am not making any sense, sorry!)

Good to know! I'm waiting to hear what GLJW says back but I won't plan on getting the melee stones anywhere else if we end up going with them. I suppose if I were the designer, I'd want to source the baguettes myself as well.

If GLJW provides me with a decent price, we'll probably go with them, because then we can have the stone shipped to us and we can hand deliver (it's about a 45 minute drive for us, no big deal), which I think would be nice. Really crossing my fingers that their quote won't be outrageous because it would be so nice to have it done in Seattle!

You are making sense!! Don't worry! :) I am glad so many people like the stone and the ring... maybe this means I actually have good taste after all

There will be SO many pictures. I promise.
