Opinions on this Asscher cut solitaire?

Add me to the voices who aren't loving this diamond. The leakage in the middle makes the stone turn dark in its center, and when the light return stops, you lose what makes a diamond look like a diamond. So this one wouldn't work for me.

Asschers are my favorite cut of stone, but a good cut is everything; they're not a forgiving stone when the cut isn't all it should be.

By leakage, do you mean the facets towards the center of the stone?

Well it has arrived, and I think it is gorgeous. The scintillation is amazing. I'm taking it to a jeweler today for appraisal and to look at resetting. So in love. The only thing is the face up is not quite as big as I imagined, I had a lot of time to let my imagination run wild. Here it is including jammed onto my much bigger finger!

I am loving the size! Asschers always face up smaller than you would think. 2.8 is a good size.

I love the stone too-- glad you are in love!!

Stunning! How are you thinking of having it set?

Well it all went to custard when I went to two jewellers. As soon as I went into the first the yellow tone really showed up either under those lights or compared to all the other diamonds, or both. The second jeweler really disliked the stone. He said that it was hiding weight somewhere, as its face size should be bigger; and that it was a GIA j or k. Then he told me a value of about half what we were expecting. I still hold that the cut is really well done and I really loved it until I saw it compared with whiter diamonds. Also I just don't feel good about it anymore as the appraiser said there was "no way" the first owner had paid what she said she did for it. He said I should ask for a receipt.

I walked away feeling really gipped by the seller and really disappointed - just a bad taste in my mouth experience. I'm returning it and I'll be done with any second hand sellers. I know this may make you all laugh, but I am always shocked when people lie like that. Feeling disillusioned.

I'm sorry to hear that it didn't work out but all hope isn't lost. What is it you're looking to buy (carat, color, etc) and what is your budget?

When you mention 'the appraiser', was that an independent appraiser or the second jeweller?

Don't forget that the jeweller may have a vested interest in making you want to change from your current stone and buy something else ;) lol

Well, but you aren't going to walk around in jewelry store lighting comparing it to whiter stones.

But, step cuts do show more body color. So you sat on it for a few days and decided you didn't like it-- nothing lost but some time.

Keep looking!

Yeah, the jewelers you took it to have no interest in making sure that asscher shows up well against their own stock which they are trying to sell!

And regarding any stone listed for sale without a reputable gem certificate (GIA or AGS) - I always add at least 2 color grades to the color range the seller has listed in the advertisement - in this case, "H-I" becomes "J-K" and from your photos I'd guess J/K is pretty close to accurate. I don't think you were gipped, I think you read the listing and considered it in its best possible terms, instead of in a neutral to negative way... PSers here tried to give you objective factors to consider (large table! leaky center!) but you wanted to see the stone for yourself. Frankly, your photos show that the asscher isn't that bad at all - not the best or even very good, but certainly an average performer - and for the price someone could make a nice ring out of it if size was their main concern.

Anyway, good luck with your search!

Thank you
The ring has the following report -
color - H
clarity - VS1
7.84 by 7.75 (1.02 ratio)
no fluorescence
total depth - 67.4%
table - 66%
crown height - 13%
pavilion depth - 51%
girdle - medium
polish and symmetry - excellent

The problem is that the report if EGL and everything I have read says to basically throw it away! So I'm a bit concerned about that. It is beautiful though, what is your opinion on the light return?

My husband and I just made the same mistake (I fear). we decided to upgrade my stone and I have always loved Asschers. The stone has not arrived yet but unless it blows me away in person, I too will be sending it back.

Hi there. I can’t private message but if this is the ring then I can tell you this - I actually regret my decision to return the ring. It was beautiful and I think it was really well cut, having seen quite a few asschers since then. In my opinion the cut is only very slightly under super-ideal in terms of light return.

What put me off was really the attitude of that one jeweler. I was more than a little vulnerable at the time. I had to make a quick decision so I returned it. It MAY indeed be a j color but the cut makes it really white unless you look at it in a jeweler store next to an F!

What I wish I had done is view it with an aset, if I’m right the result would be really good. I’ve now moved on to a diamond that cost more than twice as much and it’s beautiful, but not twice as beautiful! Give it a chance and maybe have it independently appraised and looked at by posters here. If I could go back in time I would still own it. I hope that’s not undue pressure, I guess I’m just trying to say that it really is a nice diamond with a bad set of credentials.
