Hello everybody,

I am new here and will probably be asking you all for some help and guidance in the coming months as I begin to materialize my engagement ring search! (My gratitude to all of you in advance for providing such amazing community of help to so many people.)

I have been researching for a couple of months now and have narrowed down mine and my gf's setting preference to the HW below and the similar LM R877 setting. We are both looking for something very timeless and classy. We also both decided that we do not like the RB look in ER's.

Since unfortunately, I cannot afford HW in the carat weight that I'm interested in I will most likely have Leon Mege set it since I think his work is absolutely phenomenal.

I wanted to ask for general comments on this setting and anything that I should be aware of that isn't obvious. Perhaps, pros and cons of three stone settings, of cushion cuts or anything else that comes to mind. Also, what differences do you see between the HW and the LM?

Some preferences and thoughts that I have already developed:
1) LOVE the double claw prongs
2) Will be looking for a slightly more rectangular cushion stone (not the 1:1 square kind)
3) Am thinking that since this type of setting covers the side of the stone I may be able to go down a bit in color. (I can only see color upside down or from the side)
4) Aiming for 2.5 cts cushion brilliant (not modified and not vintage)

Lastly, I really have not see any real life photos of this type of setting on this site! (but have seen it in real life)

Thank you!

Does everyone hate this setting or something? No responses at all?

I welcome all opinions!

This is a beautiful setting- classic, simple and very rich looking, both images of course, delicate double claw prongs, hand made wire basket and ideal measurements ( of side stone bullets )for the center diamond.

I think that Kellybell has that setting with an oval center stone. It is lovely...classic and timeless. You can't go wrong with that setting or with LM...

Hi Aqua, I really love the setting and the double-claw prongs are to die for. Are you going to have Leon/Perry source the cushion for you?

I am not sure yet. Thus far I have only been researching but did not look at tangeable options yet.

I have some friends in the business who I would like to try to utilize to get a good deal.

Second stop would be GOG or Perry.

Do you have any recommendations/tips?

Does Leon have certain specifications for what he accepts?

I am also considering this setting:

I believe Boston_Jeff here has it and it's amazing!

The "problem" in my mind with going solitaire is that the stone has to be larger to "make up" for the lack of mele or side baguettes.
My gf has 6-6.5 finger size and cushions face up smaller as it is.

What do you think?

I agree, cushions face up smaller than RBs, but 2.5 cts is not insubstantial at all on that size finger. If you are really unsure about the finger coverage she would prefer, you could propose using a temp setting (14k WG or one of the silver squeeze prong things) and let her design her own setting. If she decides that 2.5cts doesn't have enough finger coverage, she could go for a halo. =D

Also, settings are very personal -- some people love halos, some people love solitaires, some people love sidestones -- and I wouldn't put down the money for a Leon unless I was sure the female would like the setting.

My only comment on your specs is that you will get more finger coverage by going for a square or by setting a rectangular cushion E-W (long ways across the finger). I think the latter looks a little funky in a solitaire, so I would go for a square cushion.

Thanks for your thoughts antelope1.

While I think halos are very pretty I prefer cleaner look of solitaire/3 stone baguette settings. It is pretty much between those two at this point. Also, I really like the rectangular cushions vs. the square ones (even if it means less finger coverage).

Also, do not like the idea of temp setting - I guess I am a bit old fashioned!

So this makes things a bit difficult!
I think we will go try on a couple of different setting to see where her preference lies.

That sounds like a great idea. You're making a significant investment, and she's going to wear it for a long time. Market research can be fun, too.

The problem is that whenever I hint "too much" she says
I'm taking the romance out of it!!!

Hello all,

So I took my gf to try on various rings to see what she likes including the above mentioned HW.

To both of our suprises we seemed not to like the cushion shape which we saw at Tiffany's and HW. The HW was a modified brilliant (maybe that's why) and Tiffany their branded square brilliant. We loved the cushion in pictures but in real life were disapointed.

In any case we both prefer the RB shape set with two tapered baguettes that we saw at HW. (very simiar to above)
This is actually good for me because I feel like it's "easier" to find a god RB than cushion since there is more standardization. Also, RB's are said to show less color?

I will begin looking at H&A RB's for something b/w 2.5-3 cts H-I, VS1-SI1.

How much should I be expecting to pay for a stone of those approx specs? There are almost none availble online in that weight

Also, which vendors do you recommend for H&A's? GOS, Brian Gavin, Whiteflash?

Thanks for helping a struggling noob :read:

Thanks tyty333, I've seen that one but it's G color which I don't want to overpay for and also doesn't seem like it's an eye clean SI1.

Hey,
I posted some more above...you cant tell eye-clean from the blown-up photos. You have to call the vendor and ask them
if its eye-clean. Make sure you agree on whats eye-clean. Say 20/20 from 6 inches (or whatever number you want it
to be).

Doesnt seem like there are any H&A stones. Would be nice to get it from a vendor that has a trade-up policy but at that
size dont know if you'll ever need it  ! There were more on JA. I just posted a few. If you see any that you
are interested in, you can request and aset/idealscope image.

Leon sources stones and I hear his prices are very resonable so if you plan on going with him for your setting I would give
him a call about the stone also.

tyty

Thanks for your suggestions tyty and slg47!

I am primarily searching for a H&A. Also, I am not constrained by time and would prefer to look around for a while before committing to a single stone.

Really am looking to find something in the neigborhood of 2.8cts. Obviously the heavier the better..

If i were to contact a vendor directly, would it make sense to contact more than one at the same time?
Do they all generally have different sources or similar?

Finally, does anyone know how much should I be expecting to add to the setting by Leon Mege for the side baguettes?

EDIT: vintagelover229

Thanks so much for thinking of me!

WOW, how is that price even possible? What is the "catch"? I suppose J really shows color in that size and in cushion shape?
It is probably too big for us.. (although is there really such a thing as too big!?)

Do you know how big the baguettes would be?

I'm doing some rough guessing just from what I've seen some of his other rings priced at and would guess that a setting
like that from leon would range $3500ish. I'm thinking the baguettes would be bigger than the usual .3 ctw. Any ideas
on size?

To tell you the truth, no idea at this point since I have only just began looking at stones.
What i do know so far is that i prefer the "shorter" baguettes to the longer ones. I compared the Tiff and HW settings and the Tiff has the longer baguettes at lower angles while HW has shorter and at higher angles. We prefered the latter...

I looked around for side stone examples so you could get an idea of price but could not find baguettes (found
everything but).

The thing to take into consideration when buying an estate piece is that you no longer have to pay the hefty mark up for a piece. Many people have had great luck buying from Dover, and that's only one of the rings I listed for you (there are more, a few tiffany pieces, one I actually thought you might like in there). They do have a return policy, so you can buy the ring, have a look at it, appraise it and make sure it meets your standards. If not, you can return it, although most people after buying from them feel like they robbed the store they bought it from because they are such good deals on that site!

Here is the Tiffany one that I thought you'd like
