What is the lowest colour that you guys would choose in a platinum setting?

I don't have a limit. I like the ease and chemically non reactive nature of platinum. I also dont like super shiny metal.

Even in colored metal shanks, many will argue for white metal prongs.

Platinum won't hold a high gloss like the rhodium plating on white gold.

I like platinum for the same reason -- not a fan of the shiny metal. Also, not a fan of rhodium plating as it's a never ending process of re-plating when a person's chemicals naturally breaks down the plating and turns it back to yellow. Seems most people I know it breaks down in a year or less.

No limit. I have a K in white metal. Looks great. And it's a 9mm diamond. So it's not a small one either. I've seen L-M-N's in white metal too and liked it.

So what is one to do when one likes super shiny metal but doesn't want to deal with replating or frequent polishing? Any thoughts on palladium?

My U-V coloured OEC diamond is set in platinum and I love it! It’s a very classic combo and low maintenance.

I also love unplated white gold. Platinum is a bit greyer and unplated white gold ‘warmer’.

Palladium is a bit harder than platinum (Mohs Hardness, scratch), but a bit more deformable (Vickers Hardness). Platinum is heavy, palladium is lighter than 14k gold. But, its is not really any better at holding a high shine. At least with platinum and palladium, polishing does not remove metal. Palladium is still pretty new to the trade in its pure form, so lots of jewelry don't know how to work with it.

Thanks for sharing the article @rockysalamander. Lots of good info there.

I think I mentioned in another thread, I had a friend that bought his girl a palladium ring. They had some issues. It was a Vatche X-prong setting best I recall. It kept breaking at the bottom and was a pain to repair because not many jewelers can work with palladium (at least locally to us, at that time in space). Later on she lost her ring, and when getting a new one my buddy replaced in platinum because of his bad experiences. He didn't like the price difference but they haven't had issues. On a positive note, the jeweler he initially purchased from (for original & replacement) stood behind him on the palladium repairs, even though shipping was required.

While I have wanted to try palladium, that experience has concerned me. Granted, it was years ago and it was an isolated incident. Things could have improved, but I haven't heard any awesome war stories about palladium either to convince me otherwise.

I will say that as a girl's ring, I think the weight might be a big deal. While slightly lighter than WG, it's minimal as compared to almost 1.7x the weight gain you get with platinum. As a guy I like heavy, bulky and the ability to take a beating because I don't have the luxury of not using my hands in rough conditions from time to time. That said, it's still a minimal amount of weight overall.

No limits here either but it really depends on what we're discussing, if it's an engagement ring, pendant or other. If it's an engagement ring and you want to play it safe, if it's a Superideal round for example, I'd stick with J colour or higher. Also, it depends on the size of the stone too, larger diamonds will show more warmth than smaller ones.

You're a wealth of knowledge, rocky! Thank you!

For me - an H, though as you can see, many here disagree with me. I like a very shiny polish. I like white metals to be white. And I like them to match the diamonds they're set with.

Platinum loses its luster and looks very grey over time. Skin tone is normally beige - or somewhere on that continuum. Grey on beige is not a nice combo, in my opinion. The same with tinted stones; you end up with a cream/grey combo - which I find very dull.

As I said, tho - this is not everyone's opinion and all taste is subjective. So if you like the look of a thing - and it's a piece for you - have what you like! But if you're thinking of buying for someone else, make sure you check with THEM on this topic.

Good luck!

I think I am in the (tiny) minority, but I really do not like platinum. I fond it utterly cold. It feels (to my eyes) like I'm wearing steel. I have had platinum rings, and I haven't loved them. My favorite alloy of the moment is 14k X1 (with palladium). I have it in both plated and unplated varieties. I prefer the plated with very white diamonds (G), and the unplated with warmer colors (L).

Mr. Kaplan is an O color and she is in an intricate platinum basket and it looks great. I don’t love platinum as much as yellow gold or white gold but I love love love the feeling of extra weight it gives a ring. Not too much that it’s heavy but enough to really feel like it’s important lol.

I have no limits in color/tint, though the lowest i have O/P diamond so far. If i can i would choose platinum, it is very practical, in terms of polishing and strength though i prefer to see minimal metal showing.
