I''m curious about this stone that I saw this lady with at a mall store, maybe someone has some insight. We were in one of the mall jewelery shop and there was this lady shopping with her daughter. She was wearing this very large gem (2 to 3ct) with RB cut, that appears to be a diamond or cz but it exhibited a very strange characteristic. From the side, looking through the body, the gem appeared opaque, in other words, it was completely clouded. I would liken it to someone taking sand paper to the surface of clear plastic. Is it a bad cut or is a perhaps a CZ or the like? Do bad cuts also affect appearance from the side?

My emerald cut looks like that when it''s really dirty & needs a good cleaning....

sounds a lot like my earrngs looked before I had them cleaned recently at a mall store... hmmm... my guess would be cz or diamond- it was dirty, really really dirty... though how you could notice that at a casual distance I dunno! lol

If it were a diamond, at that size, you''d figure they''d make the effort to have it cleaned. The ring itself didn''t look that dirty.

Meh, she was obnoxious in the store towards the salesperson anyhow, maybe no one offers cuz they don''t want to deal with her.

As far as the casual glance observation, it''s hard not to notice it when she''s continuously holding and waving that hand in the air. I was tempted to tell her that if she works hard, someday she can have one of those real diamonds in the display case.

it sounds really dirty. my stone gets opaque when it''s FILTHY...which is pretty rare since i clean it almost daily. you would imagine sure that if someone has a diamond they''d take care of it, but you''d be surprised!!! some people never really just clean their diamond! hehee. also i can clean my table with my thumb and some cleaner but it doesn''t clean my pavilion at all. that''s a whole other ball of wax. so her table might be clean but her pav could be filthy.

There will be a Sharper Image ultrasonic cleaner under this year's Christmas tree. It costs a penny compared to the price of the diamond.

Yes, I think that hand lotion or grease from cooking could really attract dirt to a diamond.

My friend and my MIL have very dirty diamonds. I have made them clean them but they should be cleaned more often. They do look very dirty from the side.

It could be inclusions, but it could also be dirt!!
My friend''s ring looked like that today....hers was the best looking stone I had seen (until I got mine, of course!!), so for it to look like that really surprised me...I know hers is a good stone, and it must just need a cleaning....
