OMG!! I bought a JM on Ebay !!!!!!!!

Tell them your hubby had a fit and won't let you get it!

I agree with cancelling the transaction. The ring is lovely, but the stone isn't anything we would recommend. If I'm interpreting one of the pictures correctly, it even has a fish-eye. It looks like a pretty poorly cut modern round brilliant. Before seeing the pics, I wasn't that concerned, because often OECs get a "good" cut grade from GIA (as opposed to VG/EX), but this does not appear to be an OEC and will probably not be sparkly and beautiful in real life.

Ohh!! I wish you had done some reading on PS before you made the deal.
Since things are already messed up, the smart thing now would be to cancel the order and start your research on PS.
E-bay will probably let off with a warning but its better than wasting 6K on a ring which is not worth it.
Good luck :twirl:

Ok I did it !! I emailed the lady and explained that I cannot pay for it right now. I just hope she will understand my predicament. Keep your fingers crossed for this loon here. :)

Oh good :) If you havent paid for it yet Im sure its un- doable. Ive never bought anything on e-bay before but i mean, if you dont give her the money she wont give you the ring, I assume.

If it all works out and you can back out, just start a post with your budget and wish list and thse PS'ers will make sure you get a great ring for your budget, not just a great setting :wavey:

Well fabulous customer service guys, she agreed to cancel my transaction no questions asked, I am relieved and feel like someone up there was looking out for me, I have to say I OWE you all a great BIG VIRTUAL (((((HUG)))), thank you for your invaluable help.
and I guess I have $6000 to buy the best diamond and the setting of my dreams. I will picture the two solitaires I currently have and keep this thread updated till I get what I long for, it might not be next week as I learned my lesson, I need to be patient to get exactly what I want.
I have a question though Jim Meyer has his appraisals done by EGL and I know you guys on here are not happy with this. Can you please advise what i should be asking him for when I am handing over the brief?
I understand cut is most important but with an OEC is hard to get a excellent cut.
Give me as much ammunition as I need please ....

Nobody here see the diamond. Why do you discourage this person who was so happy? I don't understand. Who could say if the diamond value is $1000. (and generous). Sincerely, I am sad for the poster here. ::)

Most of the stones James Meyer uses are old cuts. EGL certs for old cuts is not unusual - a lot of JbEG's stones are also EGL certified, same for Old World Diamonds. Someone else will have to chime in as to why this is so, however!

You are kidding right? She paid $6000 for a ring where the mount is worth $1800 brand new. That means at least $4200 for a diamond with no lab report, that from the photos appears to be a run of the mill poorly cut MRB. That was a dramatically TOO high price, especially for an estate sale on ebay. Instead of feeling sorry for the OP, feel glad that she posted on PS and didn't flush her money down the toilet overpaying by a huge margin for a poorly cut diamond.

EGL is a lab, and they provide reports that indicate color and clarity and carat. Like GIA in that regard. This is different than an appraisal, which is what that ebay stone had -- some random person's opinion, mostly for insurance. EGL are not reputable compared to GIA and AGS, but for old cuts they are commonly used for a variety of reasons. I am satisfied with EGL reports for old cuts provided that one understands the issues with the report.

Picking a well cut old cut means knowing what to look for. James meyes seems to have a track record of choosing well cut old stones for his mounts, based on what I have seen.

:appl:

Stci, I was the one who said the diamond can probably be bought for $1k on ebay because... I've purchased nicer diamonds on ebay for less than that.

VR Beauty and Dreamer I understand a bit more more thank you :0)

I haven't yet Nielseen but I what I have done is lost nearly 22 hours on this fascinating site and now I am not doing anything until I can educate myself a bit more.
However I discovered AVOEC from good old gold and now I want one.
I have done a bit of thinking I will be in the USA next year so I will have a bit of time to save some more and maybe get something a bit larger, my max size would be a 1.5 K OEC or a 1.11K max in AVOEC as I won't be able to save for a 1.5 AVOEC in this short time unless I win big :)

I'm so glad you were able to cancel the previous transaction. Your budget is nice and you should be able to get a lovely ring at that price point. When you're ready to buy, I'm sure if you post here the experts will provide lots of good help!

I LOVE James Meyer so I love the idea of working directly with him!

If it didn't come from JM directly, it should reflect a "used" price. Especially on ebay, from a second hand seller.

Have you seen the prices on ebay lately? 99% of them are far closer to retail than they are to "used" prices. I have found some deals but that has taken months of hunting and checking every day... and I've never found any deals like you have!

I'm on it every day. ;)) Most used pieces are listed at discounted prices. The vendors who run a retail business sell items at near retail price, but I usually eliminate all of them.

I'm disappointed for you, sweetie. I agree, however, that the setting looks lovely, but the diamond is quite iffy, both in terms of color and apparent cut from what we can see from pics and what the gemology opined. At that price point, it makes no sense to try to sub out a better stone. FWIW, I've gotten caught up in the ebay mentality several times, generally overspending on colored stones. It is helpful to have a forum where you can get people's opinions before you buy, but you do want to be careful not to have someone scoop your sale, so maybe post pictures of an item you're considering.

FWIW, I'm actually surprised that a James Meyer is sub-$2,000. At that price, I'd look into having him craft one just for you.

JM's pieces are actually very reasonably priced for the very high quality of work. Prior to the recession and metal price increase, his bezel solitaires were around $1000 thereabouts, which was a fabulous price. Unfortunately, he's now semi retired and has moved on to other ventures.

Thank you guys for your invaluable help I love on line communities I am part of different ones for my varied hobby's and I always marvel at the closeness and support the members share and how readily available to give good advice they are. so glad to see this happening on here as well.

I don't usually wear them with the diamond thin bands they flank a 5 stone half eternity ring which I use as a RHR but he is in for his annual check. As you can see I am desperate to grow a bit

Looks like there is no GIA Report with this diamond, but an appraisal from some GIA trained appraiser of unknown name, that has graded the diamond after it was set in the mounting. Reading carefully, it looks like only that grading is what you bought into. It does look like an older cut diamond and the ring is pretty, but somehow I think you may have read more into the statements on Ebay than what is the reality. The image of the appraisal is fuzzy, but legible enough to know the appraiser graded the diamond when set and that it is not an official GIA report...

You are absolutely correct I wish I found this site before I bid on it. I fell in love with James Meyer's work after pinning one of his rings on Pinterest and then a few months later I found the said ring on Ebay, like a fool I made my offer then I started google ing for more info and came across pricescope I guess it is safe to say someone was looking out for me that day :)

Wow!! I love your pieces! What great combinations too. I can see why JM appeals to you.

Good one, diamondseeker!

Thank you so much Diamondseeker glad you like them :)

How do you do that? I would like your ebay-fu. I have found a few good deals and they ARE from individual sellers but I don't know all the search function options. Do I just have to go through and eliminate the sellers individually from the search? I do check the "used" box but it doesn't seem to eliminate as much as I'd like.

My list of sellers-to-avoid is very long. Everytime I find someone new, I add it to my saved lists.
