Hello everyone is 1 am in the UK and I am soo excited I could literally pee my pants. I have just bitten the bullet and bought a JM stunning ring. It was on offer for $6500 I made a different offer, it was accepted and I am now officially BROKE like really, really broke but oh so very HAPPY. However I am now doubting my impulse buy (why if is a replica? why would this brand new JM ring be sold by someone else on ebay? etc etc. The guy has fabulous feedback and I am sure he is genuine, there's just that little voice in my head ...
It reads well and it comes with a GIA appraisal, here are the stats
Carat 1.01
Round
Colour G-H
Clarity VVS1
Cut Good
Help!!!!!!

Can you post the additional inormation from the GIA report? Unfortunately I wish you would have posted here BEFORE bidding, as a cut grade of "Good" is, well, "Not very good at all"...

Also, I'm sorry I'm not familiar with JM? What does that stand for?

link to ebay ?

James Meyer?

well what do you know? it did it for me, I was trying hard to see the link in my preview doh !!

Oh No :(

The setting is gorgeous. I personally wouldn't pay that much for that particular stone (setting prices aside), but don't despair. The shop seems to have a good return policy AND maybe you'll like the diamond once you see it. Or, you could go to a very good jeweler and see if it can be taken out of the setting with minimal damage to the bezel. Then try to sell the stone, and replace it with a different stone when the funds allow. Good luck!

Did you already pay?

JM uses OEC's so I wouldn't fret over the good cut rating. Note that the listing reads-appraised by a GIA graduate not that the stone has an actual Gia cert number. Honestly I would inquire with James Meyer via email once you receive the ring. He handmakes each one so he probably has a record of that particular piece. Then you'll know if you paid a fair price. I love his work and strongly considered a ring by him. I still may if I can find the money for a nice antique stone. He will not work with outside stones though.

No not yet as i need to get my money together as they are in a few different pots right now. Shall I re consider? I really love the setting and
I know James doesn't take any outside stones anymore so if I was to have one made by him I would pay way more than that. I need to tell you that the offer i made wasn't for the full asking price.
I am weary of getting it here then sending it back as I would end up having to pay custom charges and I am not sure if i could claim these back, arrrgh.

It doesn't look like an OEC from the pics. Hmmmm.

I really love the James Meyer setting and hopefully you will find the diamond pleasing to your eye! What we would tell anyone who is contemplating bidding on a diamond ring on ebay is to be sure the diamond is GIA graded (which this one is not) and be sure it has a return policy (which this one does). So thankfully, you can have the diamond examined by an appraiser and determine if it is worth keeping. I think uncertified stones are usually optimistically represented, and to be really honest, I wouldn't have paid that much for this ring. But you can check it out and return it if you decide not to keep it!

This could easily be a ring that someone commissioned and is now selling, so it is not necessarily an OEC.

I have emailed Jim see if he can recognize it from those pictures, thank you for your help, I am kicking myself now for not asking here first.

I'm sorry, but yes, I'd reconsider. The pictures really concern me. I'm not a GG (hope to be in my lifetime), but that stone looks more yellow than a G/H. Also, there's one shot that looks like it could have some graining issues, which I guess it could be someone's smudge... You can get a better deal on the setting and a way more beautiful stone for your budget. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

That looks like a J/k color modern round brilliant. The culet is pointy and the pattern is definitely not European cut. Personally, I'd cancel the transaction.

The offer they accepted was $6000 USD, right? How much does it cost to get a brand new ring from JM?

There are people here with James Meyer settings, so it is not hard to find out how much the setting is worth. There's just no telling what the diamond is and how much it is really worth. I have no doubt that it is a James Meyer setting. The only issue is paying for a diamond with a totally unknown value.

Maybe you could have the ring sent to one of the PS appraisers and have them evaluate it for you and that way it could be returned without having the issues of paying duty and then returning if they sent it directly to you.

The setting is worth 1,800.

I would contact JM and see what he would charge you for a ring with an OEC. He now chooses his own centers, and doesn't work with customer's stones.

Based on pictures, I honestly can't pay more than $1000 for the diamond, and that's a generous estimate. I'm sorry. :(sad I have no idea how much JM charges for his settings, but $6000 sounds really high for a used ring. Not to mention you'll have to get someone to carefully take out the diamond without damaging the bezel.

eta: I just saw Gypsy's post. If the setting was only $1800, I'd definitely contact him directly.

I think that's what I will do have him source a nice diamond and get him to make it for me. I wasn't necessarily looking for an OEC but I think it might be better suited to this setting.

The ring is new :) and my problem is that I trusted the stats because I missed the graduate appraisal (yep most important thing )

If it didn't come from JM directly, it should reflect a "used" price. Especially on ebay, from a second hand seller.

Gypsy - you just beat me to it!!

I was also going to say that around 2 years ago it was around USD1800 for a yg setting by Jim...

possibly that would have gone up with gold prices though??

OP - FYI - looking at the hallmarks - they are looking identical to the ones we have on on our 4 JM rings- so I feel this ring is one that was commissioned some time ago (back when Jim was working with customers stones)

I would certainly email Jim to see what your options are - he is back from his annual inspirational trip - and may have a stone on hand that you will love

You just need to see what the ebay rules are for cancelling. Sometimes it is better to receive the item and return, but that is difficult since you are in the UK.

And yes, it should have been @ 30% or so less than the JM price selling second hand even if not worn. But there was no way to value it with an unknown stone in the center. I might have bid up to $1000-1200 for the setting.

Oh you have my dream ring :twirl: I am awaiting his reply so will keep you all posted. Thank you for the help is night night from me :0)

If you want to cancel, email the seller and tell them you made a mistake and wouldn't want to waste their time with a return. Buying and returning will tie up their merchandise for 2+ weeks given you are in the UK, and they would much rather cancel than handle a return. The seller will get their fees back as long as you let ebay know that the transaction was cancelled on your request. Ebay will probably give you a warning and that's it.

I could possibly tell them that I simply cannot gather my money which is not a lie as some of my funds are tied into a saving account so i will have to pay a fee to withdraw earlier than full term. I feel soooo stupid I am usually really good and quite savvy, but looking at this mess you would never believe it.
