old or just a bad cut?

I'd love to see the ASET and Idealscope on that!

Looks like a tranny.

Gorgeous faceting!!

That was my first thought too. I would love to see JA offer more old cuts!

I am no expert, but that was my first thought too at a glance. There are guides to compare the depth, table, etc. to get more specific in figuring out what cut it is though.

I was thinking the exact same thing!

+1 on that! Looks interesting!

GIA has a basically arbitrary definition of an OEC. The problem is that, with the exception of the culet, the facet pattern is identical to that of an RBC. What's changed is the standards for things like table size, crown height, lower girdle length and the like. Most OEC's from the early 1900's, which is their height of popularity, aren't all that round so I would guess it's more recent than that but there's no test for age on a stone, much less for a photograph of a stone. It's all guessing from the clues present. 'Transitional' is as good a word as any and that's not a name GIA ever uses on their reports. FWIW, it looks like a lovely stone, whatever you call it.

yep, looks like a tranny to me...lovely. Are you going to buy it? would really love to see the ASET.

It is very pretty to look at!

No I just bought one actually I was looking for someone else. I also half listed it on here hoping someone might do exactly that :Up_to_something:

I see its still on there sight. Strange i thought someone would give it a chance by now

Someone posted maybe two months ago that they bought an old cut from JA. It may have been that diamond. They asked if it was a keeper or should they keep looking. Anyway that is a pretty diamond!

That diamond is a beauty!

The girdle seems to have some minor scuffing and abrasions seen in the light reflection on the girdle edge when it turns. However, most old cuts I have seen seem to have less consistent girdle thicknesses, don't they? (thin to thick, etc).
Don't you wish old diamonds could talk? It's a beauty.

Dreamer calls her diamond an American cut or early mrb, I think. It has a 58 table so not too much like an OEC.

Definite tranny faceting. The one someone bought a couple months ago was a J. And they returned it. It was pretty, but not as heart grabbing as the other one that poster had their eye cut. Like all fancies old cuts have to grab you. An otherwise lovely stone might leave you cold while a slightly wonker little bugger might steal your heart.

Pretty stone. Good spread.

I found this on JA today. It looks like an old cut but is graded a MRB. Im assuming GIA has really strict standards for something to be graded an OEC or something, but is this still an old cut? if so, what kind?

I have had my eye on that one for a few weeks, it will go now... :(sad
Who knows. I posted this a year ago and no one bit

Really....that's handy to know! It's probably not to everyone's taste but I fell hard for this little guy....

The GIA report pre-dates the new "circular brilliant" cut designation but that's what it is, I believe. One of the prettiest stones I've ever seen posted here, and a great opportunity for someone.

Thank you for posting it!

Oh wow, this is lovely. I think the black thing on the girdle is the laser inscription, but there are also some bearded spots.
