Can you repair a girdle that has nicks in it? Can you polish out the nicks so the old mine diamond will be like new? Thanks.

Possibly.

Depends on the size of the damage and how much weight / size of the stone you are willing to lose.

Some PS members have had repolishing or recutting done. There are a few threads on the subject, but would you care to share a photo of your stone?

Unless they are big fat nicks, it's far more likely that repair is possible.
I've seen stones with fairly significant looking chips in the girdle repaired with minimal weight loss and change of appearance- even in modern round stones.
Cleaning up a girdle on an older stone where perfect symmetry is not an issue for a good cutter.

Yes, you can polished out all nicks on the girdle but you will loose some weight.
However, if there are chips, you would need re-cutting, not only re-polishing.

I recommend contacting Dave Atlas, he is a very respected appraiser with a lot of experience in old cuts and the contacts and skill to help you with this project.

I agree with Karl,
I wouldn’t just allow any cutter (good or bad) to repair oldcut diamonds, they have a good chance to widen the damage as in their “old cut appearance” if they have no old cut experience.

An old m8ne cut diamond can not be new by fixing nicks on the girdle. To get a modern cut you might loos up to 40% of the carat weight. Regarding fixing the chips and nicks, if they are too deep(big) the diamond will start looking square and to round it, again there will be a loss of carat weight.
There are optical machines called Sarin or Ogi that can predict the loss and the final result.

depends on how you define new, new as in safe to mount and wear with no visible chips is certainly doable in most cases.
Cleaning up the girdle is done by eyeball not scanners and a cutter skilled at doing it can remove some rather large chips without wreaking the look and losing a lot of weight and size.
There are still some cutters around that specialize in this kind of thing.
