Hi Everyone,
I''m a long time reader and 1st time poster. I''m sure you get a ton of those around here. Anyway, I''m getting ready to purchase an engagement ring for my gf. I have been looking forever and am ridiculously nervous about finding the right one. She wants an antique mounting and an antique stone. I believe, after MUCH due-diligence that I have found what i''m looking for. I was wondering if any of you could tell me if this price sounded right to you, though.
I am purchasing a 1.28 ct Old European cut diamond with J color and SI1 clarity. It is GIA certified and I have seen it next to an uncertified 1.5 carat K color OEC and several other diamonds. To me, this diamond looked the prettiest. I wish it were bigger, but oh well. Anyway, the guy is going to charge me $5800. Does that sound legit? I know you probably need some other specs (which I''m trying to get now), but for now, can you advise?
I found a mounting by a group called whitehousebrothers. It is a replica piece, but this is a group that has been around for 110 years. So they used to make these back when they WERE anitques and they swear their craftsmanship is still impeccable. I was looking to find an actual antique mounting, but after searching forever, I couldn''t find a bezel set one that I thought she''d like. So, I found one and they are going to swap out the side diamonds to a lesser grade to beeter match the center stone, plus take it from a prong setting to a bezel setting. Anyway, The guy i''m working with is saying I could go with 14k white gold, platinum or something I think he called "Platanium." Have any of you heard of that? He is recomending that I go the platanium route, b/c it''s not as expensive as platinum, but way more durable thatn 14k white gold. He wants $2800 for the mounting. So, it looks like i''m in for about $8600. I need to bring him a deposit on Thursday if i''m going through with this. I''ll be honest, i am scared to death that i''m going to screw this up...but what do you think of the price?
Thanks for your help too
