Looking at the "Old Cut Lovers" topic made me realize that there must be others (besides me) that don''t know much about old cuts (yet think they''re beautiful). It would be great if people could post good definitions and pics (though some were posted in the other thread) of all the old cuts. Also it would be helpful if some advice could be given on what to look for when looking for/at old cuts.

Thanks

This question is really too wide oddoneout.
You may have better luck breaking it down to one style of cut, and asking for info on that.

However, there have been many great and very informative threads over time on this subject. You can learn alot by just putting your terms in the search box (ie. OEC, etc).

Ultimately , its like any other gem - you are looking for something that is pleasing to your eye. Old cuts generally cannot be rated based on the numbers, like modern rounds can.
Best to look at as much as you can and decide what pleases you.

Been reading a lot about old cuts the last week and although I know that you cannot judge the stone by the proportions the way you can with new cuts, is there a rough idea of what a deeper stone would look like versus a shallower cut? I''ve been poring over all the pics I can (especially on Old World Diamonds) to try to get an idea of it but can''t seem to come to any conclusions. My instinct says deep cuts would tend to appear darker generally and shallow cuts lighter but that''s just guessing......

Experts? Can you weigh in on this one? Thanks!

Dont try to guess..., there are NO straight rules when it comes to "OLD CUTS"...., thats the title..., correct?

In fact..., there are no rules at all..., it basically depends on the relationship between the specific stone at subject and your taste buds...

There is plenty to read on PS on the subject..., good luck

+1. We''ve come across many old stones that have specs all across the board (deep, shallow, etc.) but were absolute beauties in person, and in the same token others that were dogs! They really must be seen to be judged, as it''s such a personal choice and very subjective (as DiaGem said). Just search with an open mind until you find something that speaks to you. Go with your eyes (and budget, cut, color and size specs of course!) and worry less about the other stats.

Also what speaks to one person can leave another cold. I like the high-fire stones, even at the expense of white light return. Others like that particular white-light-return-heavy, watery/pastel-y look that some shallower, bigger tabled stones like some transitionals.

Best thing you can do is try to find someplace local to check out a bunch of different oldies in person.

Thanks to all of you for the info on the measurements on old cuts. I, too, was wondering whether you can draw any conclusions from the numbers. I''m about to start looking and am going to take some advice from either Erica or Grace (my memory fails me) to look at the diamond first before I even ask about the stats.

Thanks so MUCH to everyone too for their wisdom, experience and advice. Gayletmom and I are in for a ride now I think! I was hoping that there was SOME way to narrow down my choices other than just budget and clarity (although now even THAT has gone out the window with some of the stones I''ve seen. I had been looking at nothing lower than VS grade but I''ve seen some lovely SI''s that are now in the running too.)

I thought obsessing over this would make the field narrower but it seems to have opened it up!

Hope whoever ends up selling it to us has a lot of PATIENCE! We''re probably going with something from Old World Diamonds - don''t know if they are a contributor on this forum or not but when I wrote them I mentioned I had heard of them through here. Adam if you''re reading this - I apologize in advance for the pain in the butt I''m going to be for the next few weeks! LOL
